... which is now Arlington National Cemetery. Lee never returned. Do good qualities cancel out bad works? Do good works cancel out bad? Every generation asks the question. We could name presidents, protesters, artists and celebrities whose actions make us wonder. Should this old soldier fade away as a hypocrite and a loser? History is a harsh judge. None of us will withstand the scrutiny of future generations. Today, we’re critical of, or appalled by, our history with squandering natural resources, public hangings, smoking, fur coats, child marriages – and many things that we now do every day will be seen as travesties by our progeny. To the serious student of Robert E. Lee and the Civil War, nothing is more disheartening and dangerous than stirring together Lee with the Ku Klux Klan, Dylann Roof and racists who would aggressively and insensitively wrap themselves in the Confederate flag — all floating in one ...

Robert E. Lee Captures First League Win; Lady Raiders Roll At North Mesquite

... edge and he told me that he wanted to (start imposing himself),” Simmons said of Mabry. “He just has come in and wanted to work each day, and he’s been a bright spot for us.”. Mabry was one of three Red Raiders to score in double figures with point guards Isaiah Davison and Mike Donnell also scoring 18 and 13 points, respectively. There was a reason for that too as both teams went isolation against one another. This brought about Davison and Donnell taking turns going 1-on-1 against North Mesquite defenders with crossovers, drives and layups. “We didn’t come into the game planning to do that, but when they (North Mesquite) went man, we felt like we have kids, who can beat you off the dribble and get to the rim,” Simmons said. “Overall, I think the kids did a great job; just the mindset of starting the game and finishing the game.”. After spotting double-digit leads in the first quarter to their last three opponents, the Red Raiders never trailed North Mesquite (5-9, 1-3) despite committing seven turnovers in the first five minutes. The visiting Stallions were unable to capitalize, shooting 3 of 12 from the floor in the opening frame while ...

Robert E. Lee H.s. Threat Rumors Fueled By Unverified Social Media Claims

... wrote to WHSV in a statement, who confirmed an investigation did take place. "The situation involved specific students.". But still, posts with unverified information continued to appear. "WHSV has claimed that there were no threats to any student body or administrator. I would beg to differ," a person posted on a new page created following the incident called 'Lee High for Change.'. The page already has 120 likes. The rapid spread of the unproven accounts and stories demonstrates how powerful social media has become in getting information out. "I think it's human nature to want to share things and talk about things," said Joe Showker, who has an extensive resume — which includes teaching internet safety and digital ethics and working with Rep. Bob Goodlatte. "Before social media, we would whisper in people's ears. The problem is, we're all carrying this device in our hands that has the world at our fingertips.". Showker recommended people try to verify information from a trusted source before passing it along it to their friends. "Your first human inclination is 'Oh My God, I've got to share this.' That's probably the worst thing to do. You ...

Historian Sheds Light On Virginia Holiday In The Wake Of Backlash
Historian Sheds Light On Virginia Holiday In The Wake Of Backlash

... 21, was added to the holiday. In 1984, things got a little complicated when the Virginia General Assembly combined Lee-Jackson Day with a holiday honoring Civil Rights leader, Martin Luther King, Jr. “I think some historians would say it was a very bizarre twist where the General Assembly added Martin Luther King, Jr. Day into it. So, that third Monday, you had Lee-Jackson-King, Jr. Day,” Noyalas said. In the wake of recent racially-motivated attacks, like the Charleston, SC, shootings, some people are calling for Virginia to get rid of the holiday completely, but Noyalas said many people see the generals as military geniuses, not beacons of racism. “Robert E. Lee and Stonewall Jackson are regarded as great military minds. These are guys whose tactics and strategies are still studied at military academies around the world,” Noyalas said. Some localities have already decided to not observe the holiday, but Noyalas said, official observation or not, people will remember and celebrate. “I think you’re going to have more localities following the lead of Hampton, Lynchburg and Charlottesville. I think it’s still going to be observed by those ...

... ADVERTISER)Buy Photo. The public is invited to revisit the past and attend a telling of “days gone by” from a former student of Robert E. Lee High School.
