... to "The Late Show With Stephen Colbert" Tuesday night to share inside information about President Trump's upcoming executive orders. It was Stewart's first appearance on the show since the eve of the 2016 election, when he participated in an elaborate musical number to get out the vote. For Tuesday's show, Stewart appeared in attire inspired by the inauguration, with a red tie so long it dragged the floor, and a dead animal strapped to his head. Stewart shared upcoming executive orders with Colbert: a scheme that involved China shipping the U. S. the Great Wall C. O. D. and tricking Mexico into signing for it, and a second order introducing an official, if offensive, language for the country. Stewart couldn't help but deliver an aside to his old friend Colbert. "It has been 11 days, Stephen. Eleven [expletive] days. The presidency is supposed to age the president, not the public," said Stewart. Stewart then returned to his presidential character, reading one final executive order. "The reason I, Donald J. Trump, am exhausting is because every instinct and fiber of my ...

Oliver, portraying a European news correspondent in front of a green screen that features London in the background, reflects on the British perception of the relationship between Blair and Bush, for which Blair is being mocked in the British press. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Oliver's first clip was indeed trial by fire for the comedian. The Daily Show flew Oliver to the United States for the correspondent job (only his second time ever in the country) and put him on camera the very next day. Reflecting on his experiences during his first filming of The Daily Show, Oliver stated " I remember my legs going a little bit wobbly and then thinking: 'What the f- are you doing? "It has been 11 days, Stephen. Eleven f*king days," he said. "The presidency is supposed to age the president, not the public.". To close the bit, Stewart read the final "executive order," a somewhat lengthy speech that resembled one of the comedian's old "Daily Show" monologues. "I, Donald J. Trump, am exhausting because it is going to take relentless stamina, vigilance, and every institutional check and balance this great country can muster to keep me, Donald J. Trump, from going full Palpatine," Stewart said, alluding to the evil "Star Wars" emperor. "We have never faced this before. Purposeful, vindictive chaos. But perhaps therein lies the saving grace of my, Donald J. Trump's, presidency.". Stewart continued, "No one action will be adequate. All actions will be necessary. And if we do not allow ...

... the press is un-American?” Colbert asked. Stewart switched gears. “Ohhh, it’s un-American not to like the press!” he said mockingly. “You know what I say? I say stop your whining, press! Can I talk to the media for a moment?” He looked directly into the camera. “Hey guys, hey media,” Stewart started. “So, I heard Donald broke up with you. Stings a little, doesn’t it? You finally thought you’d met your match. A blabbermouth who’s as thin-skinned and narcissistic as you are. Well now it’s over! Well, good riddance, I say! Kick him to the curb.”. Cue cheering from the studio audience as Stewart went on. “It is time for you to get your groove back, media. Because, let’s face facts, you kind of let yourself go a little bit for these past few years. You put on a few pundits,” he said. “Obsessing, 24 hours a day, seven days a week, about this one guy. ‘What’s Donny up to?! Did he say anything about us?! You think he’s gonna come on our show?! Do you think he even likes us? He doesn’t even have to come on. He can just call us! Oh Donny, please, just let us know you’re okay!’ ”. “It’s time to get your groove back, media.” – ...

What Jon Stewart, Bono And Nicholas Kristof Understand About Trump Voters

... they're profoundly wrong, but please don't dismiss them as hateful bigots.". Kristof received a backlash among his liberal Twitter followers for writing that Democrats can come across as patronizing when they talk about Trump voters. The outrage amounted to, "Yes, of course we're going to be patronizing to people who voted for an ignorant racist hatemonger!" One reader wrote, "I won't coddle those who refuse to recognize my humanity.". And that's been much of the Left's response so far to Trump and the scores of millions of people who voted for him: I won't tolerate their intolerance, and I refuse to recognize the humanity of those who don't recognize mine.". It's not a very helpful approach, Kristof explains. Kristoff reviews all the reasons why he and other liberals think Trump is THE WORST PERSON IN THE WORLD. But then he adds, "But let's be careful about blanket judgments.". He goes on to explain the economic and social factors that drove many of his old friends to support Trump, and says that he believes those factors had nothing to do with ignorance, race or bigotry. ... Kellyanne Conway’s term “alternative facts” last month. That’s absurd. There’s nothing to be stunned about. Trump and everyone around him have been consistent to a fault in their behavior. There’s this sense that, well, D. C. is the dominant gene, and anyone who goes there will have to kowtow to how things are done there. But you’re dealing with a human wrecking ball. On whether Trump’s Twitter use is purposefully strategic to just “tantrums”. Is Trump strategic, or is he sophisticated enough to know the power of the kind of linguistic hand grenade that he has become? Because even if he isn’t, it’s a classic magician’s misdirection trick, isn’t it? Is he sophisticated enough to understand the power to distract people from what you’re doing with ridiculous behavior? And the party he nominally belongs to is definitely sophisticated enough to know that. They could get a lot of shit done while people are gasping over the things that Trump has said. You could do hard legislation in the shadows, because if a magician comes onstage and releases a chimpanzee into the room who starts throwing feces at people, it’s going to ...

(CNS photo/Nancy Wiechec). In Spanish it is called tira y aloja, literally, “pull and loosen.” The Italians have two different phrases, depending upon whether one is speaking figuratively or literally. The figurative, braccio di ferro, means “arm of iron.” The game itself is called tiro alla fune, “pull at the rope.” That is quite close to the French tir à la corde. One of our English terms is prosaic, “rope pull,” like the German Tauziehen. The other is more provocative, bringing out the essentially communal nature of the game: “tug of war.”. Tug of war builds teams, because it requires a disparate group of people to pull as one. Their individual strengths are multiplied, and weakness anywhere in the line can be exploited. As any camp counselor knows, if you want strangers to begin to rely on each other, to see that they are all in this together, make ...

Rather, the sights, sounds, smells, tastes that we encounter, the things we touch, and the bodily postures that we assume, have deep significance for our lived faith. Indeed, in recent years, the academic study of religion has paid increasing attention to this area of materiality. It is a world in which a gesture often means more than a thousand words. Physical penance. In this regard, I often think of Rodrigo Mendoza , the slave-trader played by Robert De Niro in the film The Mission (1986). Having confessed his sins to the Jesuit, Fr Gabriel (Jeremy Irons), including the murder of his own brother, Mendoza is assigned an agonisingly harsh penance. He is strapped to a heavy cache of his former weapons, which he must drag through the torturous terrain of the Paraguayan rainforest to the Jesuit mission where he is to stay. ... see you again and you will rejoice, and no one will take away your joy. On the Cross, Jesus is going to look like every other slave and rebel who’s ever died naked and ashamed on a cross. Jesus is going to be humiliated and all the people who followed Him are going to be too. And so, right before all that happens, Jesus draws them in close and tells them a couple of things about suffering, and what kind of community they have to be for one another. He reminds them of the miracle that all of us know about but so easily forget. One that happens every day in every town and city all over the world. A woman goes through tremendous amounts of pain, she pushes her body to the edge of death, and then after hours, sometimes days of pain, a corner has been turned and she never looks back. She, in the words of Jesus, forgets the anguish. I’ve seen this 5 times personally, and everytime I feel like I’m in the face of a miracle. My wife was screaming and weeping in one moment, and the next nothing but pure joy. ... is a day of fasting and reflection. It is also the first day of Lent on the Christian calendar. Lent last 46 days, and ends on Easter. Traditionally, one will give up something during the Lenten season in commemoration of the 40-day fast Jesus experienced in the Judaean Desert. Lent last 40 days with the six Sundays that fall within the period being non-fasting days. It gets its name - official the “Day of Ashes,” -  because of the practice of rubbing ashes on one’s forehead in the sign of a cross. Why the name Mardi Gras or Fat Tuesday. The name is believed to have come from the practice of eating richer, fatty foods prior to fasting during the Lenten season. How is the date for Mardi Gras determined. Lent, a season of fasting, reflection and prayer, begins on Ash Wednesday. The season leads to the commemoration of the resurrection of Jesus Christ on Easter. There are a few of those self-validating “ Fight Song ” I’m-fine-on-my-own type numbers, but for every one of those there are many more crying for or lamenting our imagined other halves. We are drowning in liturgies that remind us of our loneliness. Furthermore, for those of us lucky enough to have landed a relationship, the same liturgies tell us that our worth and happiness are understood only with respect to the relationship. In the end, the radio station was right. A 40-day respite from pop culture worked wonders for me. I had never felt more free, more hopeful, or more at peace on an Easter Sunday than I did last year. ... because they “get a sense of repentance and a kind of solidarity in it.”. “Clearly it touches on a deep sense of Catholic tradition in a way few other symbols do,” he told CNS Feb. 17. For many, it also links them to childhood tradition of getting ashes. It also links them, even if they are unaware of its origins, to an ancient Church tradition. The priest said the use of ashes goes back to Old Testament times when sackcloth and ashes were worn as signs of penance. The Church incorporated this practice in the eighth century when those who committed grave sins known to the public had to do public penitence, sprinkled with ashes. But by the Middle Ages, the practice of penance and marking of ashes became something for the whole Church. Ash Wednesday also is one of two days, along with Good Friday, that are obligatory days of fasting and abstinence for Catholic adults—meaning no eating meat and eating only one full meal and two smaller meals. The other key aspect of the day is that it is the start of the 40 days of prayer, fasting and almsgiving of Lent. “Ash Wednesday can be a little bit like New Year’s ...

However, that's not all that mattered. Notably absent from the joint address was Owens' father, William, who declined an invitation to the White House after Ryan's death, calling for an investigation into the botched mission. Trump Just Blamed The Military For The Botched Yemen Raid. That's A Disgrace

... comments betray the service members whom he commands, as well as their leaders. Service members (and their families) put their faith in their leaders, up to and including the president, that they will spend their lives wisely. When things go wrong, American troops expect ruthless and rigorous introspection to identify failures, to learn lessons that might avoid failure the next time. It’s a principle I learned and lived by as a young Army officer and combat leader in Iraq; my troops expected I would put ego aside to focus on the mission, and put their lives and welfare above mine. Shifting blame undermines this faith, as does the White House’s steady evasion of requests for post-raid investigations. The father of the fallen commando didn’t want to meet with Trump. These breaches of faith, as evidenced by the White House’s defensive maneuvers immediately after the raid, probably played some role in the decision by Bill Owens, the fallen commando’s father, to refuse a meeting with the president. “I’m sorry; I don’t want to see him,” Owens told a military chaplain at Dover Air Force Base after being told that Trump would be ...

At least three others were hurt in the raid and another three were injured when a Marine Osprey MV-22 B tilt-rotor aircraft landed hard while picking up casualties. The White House has stood by its characterization of the raid as a success. The raid killed at least 14 al-Qaida fighters and netted, the Pentagon said, valuable information about the militant group. U. S. Central Command has said it is investigating if civilians, including children, were mixed in with the militants and not visible to assault forces, adding it was “likely” some were killed in the crossfire. ... Air Force Base in Delaware to meet the family of Chief Petty Officer William “Ryan” Owens. Photo: Mark Wilson/Getty Images. New questions have emerged about what went wrong in the U. S. military raid against Al Qaeda in Yemen last weekend. Chief Petty Officer William “Ryan” Owens, a Navy SEAL, was killed in the operation and three other U. S. service members were injured. Nawar Al-Awlaki, the 8-year-old daughter of American Al Qaeda leader Anwar Al-Awlaki, was also killed , and local reports say as many as 30 people died. The raid was the first operation approved by President Trump. Earlier this week, a senior military official told NBC News that “almost everything went wrong” during the mission. The aim was to detain Yemeni tribal leaders working with Al Qaeda and gather phones and computers that could yield intelligence. But Navy SEALS found themselves in an intense 50-minute firefight, with Al Qaeda fighters using women and children as cover, and some of the women firing at the commandos. This week we also took significant action to roll back the massive regulation that is devastating our economy and crippling American companies and jobs. That's why I have issued a new executive order to create a permanent structure of regulatory reduction. This order requires that for every 1 new regulation, 2 old regulations must-and I mean must-be eliminated. It's out of control. The January employment report shows that the private sector added 237,000 jobs last month. A lot of that has to do with the spirit our country now has. Job growth far surpassed expectations in January, and the labor force participation also grew, so you can be encouraged about the progress of our economy. It's going to be a whole new ball game. But there is still much work to do. That I can tell you. Also this week, on the first day of Black History Month, I was pleased to host African American leaders at the White House. There are no concrete plans yet to provide Americans with a workable alternative to the Affordable Care Act - a reality that is fast eroding Republican political capital. But Trump promised a much better system than the one that formed the centerpiece of Obama's political legacy. A new system, he said, must retain coverage for Americans with pre-existing conditions, should offer plans backed by tax credits and expanded Health Savings Account and should preserve Medicaid expansion in the states. Trump also vowed to bring down the high price of drugs "immediately.". "Obamacare is collapsing - and we must act decisively to protect all Americans," he said, "Action is not a choice - it is a necessity.". Undocumented and legal immigrants alike will sure to be listening to what tone he takes Tuesday. Victims of anti-Semitic violence. Trump ran a campaign accused of playing to support from intolerant groups such as white nationalists and even Nazi sympathizers. He eventually condemned the support of such groups, but was criticized for his at times seeming reluctance to do so. It’s an issue that followed him into the White House. Recent anti-Semitic vandalism and bomb threats against Jewish schools and community centers have roiled communities around the United States. Asked about it during a news conference, Trump told a Jewish reporter to sit down when he asked about how Trump plans to combat anti-Semitism. Trump has since called on the violence to stop. “The anti-Semitic threats targeting our Jewish community and community centers are ...

... Crowley. (Photo by Melina Mara/The Washington Post). Midway through his address to Congress, President Trump paused to highlight the inspiring story of Megan Crowley, 20, whose life is a testament — in part — to American entrepreneurship. When Megan was diagnosed with an extremely rare disease as a baby, her father, John Crowley, founded a small biotechnology start-up to try to cure Megan and her brother — an effort that ultimately grew into an 80-person company  and helped create the drug that keeps Megan healthy today. Megan’s affliction, Pompe disease, is exceedingly rare. The course of the disease varies by patient, but it causes children’s muscles to weaken and, eventually, their lungs may fail. Today, thanks to the work of her father — and the American biotechnology industry — Megan is a sophomore at University of Notre Dame. Trump said that cutting regulations at the Food and Drug Administration, which regulates drugmakers, would be a path to more stories like Megan’s. “If we slash the restraints, not just at the FDA but across our government, then we will be blessed with far more miracles like ...

... jobs and tax and regulatory reform." Expect talk of his budget , which would boost military spending and make deep cuts to other federal agencies, to be folded into all that. So, it's not a State of the Union. Nope. Presidents typically don't give State of the Union addresses until they've been in office for at least a year. That's because new presidents don't know the true state of the union until they've been governing for a while. Who will be there. Member of Congress are invited to attend, and each of them gets to bring guests. Often, who they take onto the House floor is a statement in itself. For example, House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., said she plans to bring guests who are under threat from the president , including an undocumented immigrant who faces deportation and a woman who lost her son to gun violence. The White House also released ...

It will be carried on many television networks and their websites and social media feeds. Among the organizations planning live coversage: ABC, Bloomberg, CBS, CNN, C-Span, Fox, Fox Business, Fox News, MSNBC, NBC and PBS. “We’re going to spend a lot more money on military,” Trump told “Fox & Friends” in an interview aired Tuesday, saying he could stand to see even $30 billion more than what’s being recommended. “We’re going to get involved in negotiating. We’re going to be able to get, I think, a lot more product for a buck and I’m going to be very, very serious about it,” he said. The White House said Trump has been gathering ideas for the address from the series of listening sessions he’s been holding with law enforcement officials, union representatives, coal miners and others. Aides said he was still tinkering with the speech Monday night. Republicans, impatient to begin making headway on an ambitious legislative agenda, hope Trump arrives on Capitol ...

... his five-year ban on lobbying is less than advertised. Trump has originally promised to extend the ban to congressional officials, but he did not. Moreover, the five-year ban applies only to lobbying one’s former agency — not becoming a lobbyist. Trump actually weakened some of the language from similar bans under Obama and George W. Bush, and reduced the level of transparency. “We’ve defended the borders of other nations, while leaving our own borders wide open, for anyone to cross — and for drugs to pour in at a now unprecedented rate.”. The data are mixed on the amount of drugs coming through the borders. The amount of marijuana seized at the border continues to decline — probably a reflection of drug use in the United States, as more states legalize marijuana for medical or recreational use. ...

... for finding their next quarterback. “We’re working on that tirelessly. I wouldn’t say 24 hours (a day), but we’re darn close,” Lynch said on KNBR this week. “There’s been many nights when I’ve been over in my hotel, waking up in the middle of the night thinking about that very thing.”. We wrote Thursday about former Patriots executive Mike Lombardi on a podcast saying he thinks the most likely landing spot for Patriots backup Jimmy Garoppolo is San Francisco – although he also said he thinks Garoppolo will stay in New England. Washington’s Kirk Cousins is another notable quarterback that could be on the move this spring. And another media member that runs in league circles thinks the Pro-Bowl signal caller may join the 49 ers. Jim Harbaugh quips that he deserves medal for lasting 4 years with 49 ers. Former NFL scout Daniel Jeremiah, now a draft analyst for NFL Network, in a radio spot in San Diego and on his “Move the Sticks” podcast this week indicated he thinks Cousins is bound for the Bay ...

Redskins, Kirk Cousins Still No Closer On Agreement

... led his team to back-to-back winning seasons for the first time in 20 years while setting consecutive franchise single-season passing records. Teammates, including Pro Bowl left tackle Trent Williams and tight end Jordan Reed , have lobbied publicly for the Redskins to re-sign Cousins. Coach Jay Gruden has discussed moving forward with the quarterback as though it’s a foregone conclusion. Team President Bruce Allen hasn’t wavered when asked about his plans either. But all of that is lip service. Asked whether the Redskins planned to retain Cousins’ services via a multiyear deal or the franchise tag, Allen said, “The goal is to get long-term.” However, as of Tuesday evening, people familiar with the situation said that the sides hadn’t come any closer on an agreement. Related Articles. February 28, 2017 Chiefs cut Jamaal Charles to sign Eric Berry, Laurent Duvernay-Tardif to deals. ... via Twitter. Only Cousins could have responded like this. Washington deployed the exclusive franchise tag on Cousins this year , a change from 2016 when the team used the non-exclusive tag on their QB. The exclusive tag still allows for the team to potentially work out a trade for Cousins, but it does make the move less likely. Cousins has repeatedly said that he is fine with the tag and views it as the organization wanting his services. He should be happy with the tag, it means a guaranteed $24 million salary for 2017, on top of the nearly $20 million he made in 2016. Most expect Cousins to sign the tag and sign it quickly. That does not preclude the organization from working on a long-term deal; the two sides have until July 15 th to work on a multi-year contract. Report: Redskins have no intention of trading Cousins. Speaking on __link__ , Ian Rapoport said that the Redskins have no intention of letting go their quarterback. “He is not going anywhere,” said Rapoport. “Really, what the Redskins did was answer one of the biggest questions of ...

Washington Redskins Place Exclusive Franchise Tag On Qb Kirk Cousins

... (AP) - In a move that seemed the most likely at this point in the odd dance between Kirk Cousins and the Washington Redskins, the team placed the exclusive franchise tag on the starting quarterback on Tuesday. The Redskins announced the news one day before the deadline for assigning tags to players. Nearly a half-hour before the club itself sent out a news release about the move, Cousins' agent Mike Mc Cartney tweeted about it, and Cousins wrote on the social media site: "Tag! I'm it!". Coming off a pair of statistically impressive seasons, and a nearly $20 million salary under the franchise tag last season, Cousins is now in line for a one-year salary of about $24 million. He also could wind up agreeing to a long-term contract with the Redskins sometime before July 15 - or they also could decide to trade him, perhaps to a QB-starved team such as the San Francisco 49 ers, whose new head coach is former Washington offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan. By using the exclusive tag, the ...

If you’re choosing one and you’re building out for the next five or six years, who are you picking? I think it’s pretty easy to pick Kirk Cousins.”. Barber is convinced that Cousins, who played last season under the franchise tag, is as good as gone from the Redskins after the 2017 season. [ If Redskins want a Kirk Cousins extension, first they must use the franchise tag ]. “I don’t know who the hell the Washington Redskins think they’re going to go get when Kirk Cousins leaves, because he’s going to leave,” Barber said. “He’s going to leave. If you’re thinking this is an unfair thing to say about Kirk Cousins, well, you’re not the only one. Another panelist on the show later made that point. Um. Actually, turns out it was Smith himself who later made that point. “Listen, let me say this, what I was told about Kirk Cousins, I don’t like,” he said. “I’m willing to be man enough to admit: it’s kind of unfair to him. Because at the end of the day, you go out on the field, and you perform. And you look at the subpar quarterbacks permeating the National Football League, he’s not one of them. I am hesitant to give him franchise-caliber money, but the more he appears willing to accept one-year deals, the more my respect for him grows, because he’s saying ‘I’ll go out there and perform.’ I like that.”. It makes you wonder why Smith ...

... really starting to fall. …. “From what I hear, they’re not, in [Redskins Park], totally 100 percent sold on Kirk to give him the money that he could get,” Jeremiah said later. “So I don’t think they come to a long-term deal, and I don’t think they can really afford to franchise him next year for a third year. So the feeling is hey, if we’re going to move on, we need to get something in exchange for him. And San Francisco would seem like the likely landing spot there. So we’ll see what happens. If they believe in Colt Mc Coy like some people believe they do, they make that trade, they end up with the second pick in the draft. Might have to part with their own pick, no. 17, but they could wind up with the second pick in the draft. And then they have to decide if they want to draft one of these kids, or whether you go with Colt Mc Coy and just draft somebody else at that spot.”. For them, the complex inventions of the past as well as the industrially-made cities of men were outward manifestations of human arrogance that irked the goddess they worship. As Aloy makes her way through foreign lands she comes to see the Nora’s condemnation of technological artifacts as evidence of gross ignorance. The storyline is certainly not enamored with religion, but it displays a respect for acts of celebration and ritual. ... crablike machines have containers on their backs and appear to be transporting items for unknown purposes. Ironically the machines are much more lifelike than the humans. The plot of the game centers around the asexual female protagonist Alloy. As a lead, her personality is kind of a drag. She switches from wet blanket, chiding other characters for their drinking or moral flaws, to doormat, accepting crappy chores from the countless side characters (90 percent of whom are assholes). The game offers very few likable characters, even with the star power of Cedric Daniels (Lieutenant Daniels on The Wire). But despite its lackluster characters, the overarching story is solid. The plot offers up its mysteries sparingly. It takes until nearly the end of the main storyline to figure out the most important questions: why the apocalypse happened and why there are giant robot dinosaurs everywhere. Despite the absurdity of the last part, the game actually does offer up a convincing explanation. There’s been much ado in the gaming press about the game’s politics. Some describe it as the “wokest” game of all time, which is true ...

... Szczepanski admitted. "The list of verbs we had didn't sufficiently match our needs.". In other respects, the verbs proved to be less interesting than they had originally hoped, he told me later. Guerilla plans to revisit their list of actions and revise them accordingly. It should be noted that we weren't huge fans of Horizon Zero Dawn's quest design, with Caty writing in her review , "The side missions in Horizon Zero Dawn are consequentially stale, in that they feel repetitive and pointless to a fault. In one, I help gather supplies for a woman's superpowered gun. I slaughter some people, get the supplies, slaughter more people with the new gun, and then we're pals. In most cases, you're fetching something for someone, you're helping someone fight (whether it's against robots or bandits), or you're finding a missing person.". My main takeaway? Building a lot of quests is ridiculously hard, especially in the context of an open-world game. But with a bit of experience and a workable system under their belt, Guerilla can now work to flesh out their quest design and tell more interesting stories for Horizon Zero Dawn's inevitable sequel. In our time with the game, we discovered a pair of Very Rare-quality items that might catch the attention of eagle-eyed players. Both of these have icons that feature a striking resemblance to the silhouette of the Kojima Productions logo. Beyond that, there's the name of the two items, Stranded Shackles and Stranded Figure, that might hammer home that this is not a mere coincidence. Their respective descriptions-or at least that of the Stranded Figure-may also further hint at what we've seen in trailers for Death Stranding. "This mysterious item is valuable only to the most curious merchants. A battered idol of an infant, smelling faintly of decay," it reads. A baby has factored prominently into our early looks at Death Stranding. There may be other Easter eggs hidden in Horizon. If so, with it getting into the hands of the public ...
