Dr. Seuss' Whimsical World Alive At Ipfw
... Cat in the Hat came back on Saturday – to IPFW’s bookstore. For the fourth year in a row, staff members at the headquarters for all things mastodon hosted a birthday celebration for Theodor Seuss Geisel, known to generations of young readers as Dr. Seuss. Had he not died in 1991, Seuss would turn 113 on Thursday. Jamie Sinninger, assistant bookstore manager, said Seuss’ works, with their silly rhymes and use of easy rhyming words, have become timeless. On Saturday, children could get to know the good doctor by doing crafts, coloring activity sheets and checking out their favorite Seuss stories on new i Pads. They could have Seuss storybooks read to them – in English and Spanish – or even pause for a selfie with The Cat in the Hat as portrayed by 18-year-old Tin Oo of Fort Wayne, an IPFW business student. That’s how Michelle Mendez, 7, and her cousin Kimberly Sanchez, 5, both of Fort Wayne, were ending their visit. Michelle’s dad, Gregorio Mendez, 39, brought them to the event. Also accompanied by his daughter Dulce Mendez, 3, Gregorio Mendez said the older girls are Seuss fans. Michelle prefers “the Grinch book,” he said, referring to “How the Grinch ...

This artwork by The Super Poor Kids illustrates the arrest of Black Lives Matter activist Deray Mc Kesson during a protest in Louisiana after the death of Alton Sterling. "This is an uncomfortable topic and we want you to feel uncomfortable," Jay Reyes said. "This topic is not for you to just look at and be like, 'That is cool.'. You should feel some type of way about it. Everyone should.". That's why Sam Colon, founder of Only Elite Matters, wanted to showcase the art at a venue near Temple's campus. His startup is a creative agency that also organizes collaborative events featuring work he believes will resound with people. Schools To Celebrate Dr. Seuss' Birthday
... for Read Across America. While school officials find it important that students read year round, the celebration is a reminder to the students that reading can be a fun activity. Chaparral will host several events this week including a Dr. Seuss costume day, a pajama day and a cake day where students will be allowed to bake a Dr. Seuss themed cake and bring it to share with the class. The celebration will continue as students from Deming High School’s National Honor Society come in to read Dr. Seuss books to all the classes. “The students get really excited,” sad Librarian Susan Matkin. “The people who come to read always stress the importance of learning to read and learning to read well.”. For the past 12 years, Matkin has assisted with Read Across America festivities at Chaparral and says the students look forward to the events every year. The national day is sponsored by the National Education Association and has been conducting events across the U. S. for the past 20 years. The ultimate goal of the day is to promote reading for younger students in schools and to show students that reading is a vital part of their ...
An Idea Is An Idea No Matter Who Inspired It
... and make sure that we keep enough resources around for future generations, Danens said. “The best way to express an idea to young children is to make it entertaining, and I really think Dr. Seuss did that with the message about saving the environment within ‘The Lorax,’” Danens said. In elementary school, she remembers how the classroom used to celebrate Dr. Seuss’ birthday with a day dedicated to reading. “We used to come to school in pajamas, and we would bring sleeping bags and just lay on the floor and read all day,” Danens said. “It was always my favorite day of school.”. Inspired by the “non-structured” feel that Dr. Seuss’ illustrations have, senior graphic design major Sadie Goff said she has created artwork that resembles his. “Knowing that he was successful despite his breaking of formal art rules is a small comfort to someone with a less-refined drawing ability like me,” Goff said. She ...
