Organizing The People’s Power To Resist
Organizing The People’s Power To Resist

... measure they propose. We will use the courts as one avenue to aggressively advance our agenda, but we cannot do it alone. That is why the ACLU is launching a major new grassroots mobilization platform, People __link__ , in response to the growing number of people who believe that Trump’s actions cannot go unchallenged. We’ve hired a group of digital organizers who have worked with activist groups, the White House, and Bernie Sanders’ presidential campaign to help build and launch People __link__. With this platform, we hope to help organize the mass resistance to President Trump’s bankrupt policies. With a nationwide presence through our 50-plus state affiliates, the ACLU is well-positioned to take on the incredible responsibility of grassroots organizing coast to coast. This type of program is new for us at ACLU, but it is necessary if we are going to overcome the Trump administration’s attempts to curtail civil rights and eventually advance a 21 st century civil liberties agenda. On March 11, the ACLU will hold a “Resistance Training” town hall in Miami, ...

... been disrespected, and his rights violated," she said. "I know how that feels. It's not always easy to stand up for yourself, especially if your ideas are unpopular or new.". Trump's letter. Despite the Trump administration's decision this week to rollback guidance on how public schools should treat transgender students, Iowa education leaders say little will change for students here because of  protections that are already part of Iowa civil rights law. Iowa schools must allow students to use bathrooms or locker rooms, as well as address students by the names and pronouns, of the gender they identify with. "Truly, nothing changes for schools," said Staci Hupp, spokeswoman for the Iowa Department of Education. Nationally, however, rescinding the Obama administration's guidance prompted questions about  whether the U. S. Supreme Court will hear a case filed by a Virginia high school senior who is transgender. The U. S. departments of Education and Justice issued a "Dear Colleague" letter  on Feb. ...

... talking about! You are so ignorant of history, its embarrassing! Keep your venom to yourself. February 25, 2017. 6:27 AM. To first anonymous: What a bunch of diatribe! You have no idea what you're talking about! You are so ignorant of history, its embarrassing! Keep your venom to yourself. February 25, 2017. 6:31 AM. Anna Villarreal. The fact that you make your deplorable comment without even using your name shows you are a coward and that you don't really stand behind the lies and half truths that you use to try to defend your position on indigenous people. You're trying to stir the pot and lack the backbone to do so by using your name. February 25, 2017. 2:04 PM. Akecheta Shipshewano. I find your comment ignorant, selfish and heartless. Native American tribal sovereignty is partially limited as "domestic dependent nations," so too is the sovereignty of the federal government and the individual states – each of which is limited by the other. Technically, Congress has no more power over Indian nations than it does over individual states. In the 1970 s Native ...

They’re important because they remind us that the personal is political, and how much more personally can you reach masses than through a TV screen. ... never stay won,” said Denise Maes, public policy director for ACLU of Colorado. “We would have thought 44 years ago, with Roe v. Wade, it was settled. And it was obviously for a long period of time, but there’s been little chipping away and chipping away and chipping away.”. Maes provided a rundown of bills introduced this year in the Colorado Legislature – some considered favorable, others not – having to do with reproductive rights. About 100 residents attended the “Road Show for Reproductive Health” on Saturday morning at the Durango Public Library. The ACLU is holding six meetings across the state to remind residents of their rights to reproductive health while listening for concerns about access. Durango was the fifth stop on the circuit. Other cities visited include Grand Junction, Pueblo, Cañon City, Westminster and Boulder. Most people think ...

... protection and prohibit discrimination based on race, color and national origin. At a news conference Wednesday, MPD Chief Flynn "categorically and unequivocally" denied the allegations, citing that most of the violence in Milwaukee occurs in central city neighborhoods, which are overwhelmingly poor and non-white. He defended the department's strategies and tactics, noting the goal is to deter crime, not "revenue-raising, harassment or the imposition of fines and warrants on people unable to pay them." Officers are encouraged to make traffic stops, and to engage pedestrians, but often release people without a fine or ticket, according to Flynn. "An active police department that gets out of its cars … affects perceptions of safety – it affects the fear level, it affects the fact that people believe those public spaces are being watched," he said. "The department has made no secret of its intentions to flood communities of color with police officers whenever parts of those communities are ...

The 27-year-old producer is hardly a political artist, but when the Trump administration unveiled the contentious travel ban , the visa-reliant musician felt compelled to do something more visibly empowering than "tweet and donate." En route to his show in Salt Lake City, Zaslavski decided to plan a benefit concert for the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU). He had no experience securing venues or performers.
