Will This Be The Wettest February In Seattle Weather History
... up the charts in terms of rainfall. (AP). Seattle weather has given the region the sixth wettest February on record, as of Monday. According to UW Climatologist Cliff Mass , Seattle had reached 8.01 inches of rain when he blogged about it on Feb. 18. One day later, the record rose to 8.06 inches. That’s 1.05 inches below the all-time wettest February. Related: It takes more than rain to cause landslides around Puget Sound. The all time February rain record is 9.11 inches, set in 1961. With rain in the forecast over the coming week, it is possible that the Seattle region could surpass that final 1.05 inches and make it into the no. 1 spot. But the jury is still out on how likely that will happen. Even before more rain fell on Sunday, Mass predicted the record would “almost certainly” be broken. “The chances are very good that a new February rainfall record will be set at Seattle-Tacoma Airport and a number of other western WA locations,” Mass wrote in his blog. “All this precipitation has caused our soils to become highly saturated, resulting in ...
Seattle Goes Straight To Thundersnow
... strike hitting the landmark's top. I counted four other lightning strikes as I filmed the transition from rain to hail to snow outside. And Mark D. Lim also managed to capture the lightning strike. The wild weather was courtesy of an active Puget Sound Convergence Zone, which is formed by colliding winds that wrap around the Olympic Mountains. This zone was intense enough to drop the temperature 6 degrees in minutes to the mid 30 s and brought a rare thundersnow. The Zone was expected to fizzle by late evening and temperatures were to climb back into the upper 30 s, melting the new snow. A Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 9 p.m. for the Seattle Metro and Eastside areas but the bulk of the snow was expected in the convergence zone. Round 1 wasn't too shabby either. The ...
Big System’ To Dump Rain, Bring Warmer Weather To Seattle Area
... degrees in the next few days. Share story. Vernal Coleman. Seattle Times staff reporter. A storm expected to move into the Puget Sound region Wednesday could dump as much as 2 inches of rain, according to the National Weather Service. “It’s going to be a big system,” said meteorologist Dana Felton. “Everyone across the region is going to see some warm rain.”. Residents of the region will start to see rainfall about 10 a.m., according to forecasters. With an expected high temperature of 41 degrees, forecasters don’t expect the rain to transition into snow. But the storm could remain in the region through the rest of the week, forecasters say. Most Read Stories. Unlimited Digital Access. $1 for 4 weeks. The forecast for Thursday calls for a high temperature of 51 degrees and a 90 percent chance of rain. The storm could drop an additional ½ inch of rain on the region by the end of the day, according to forecasters. The storm could drive Seattle’s February rainfall total past the average, meteorologists say. Around 3.1 inches of rain have been recorded this month, said Mike Mc Farland, National ...
This Soggy Pattern Keeps Up, Seattle Could Pass The 'other' Washington In Annual Rainfall
... five, have ranged from 44-48 inches. The way NOAA calculates average rainfall totals is to take the past 30 years of data and update it each decade. Presently, our averages include the span from 1981-2010. But with a wet decade under way, I took a sneak peek of where Seattle is trending for the next update after 2020 is complete. From 1991 through 2016, our average rainfall jumps to 39.42 inches - an increase of 1.93", which is quite a bit for a 30-year average (well, technically 26-year average at the moment.). And that's not counting 2017, which is off to a very wet start with our record February in the making. It edges us closer to some of the big cities that are ahead of us: New York City is at 42.46" and Boston is at 43.12 inches. That's. still a ways to go, but there is one major city that sees Seattle coming up fast in their rear view mirror: Washington, D. C. Reagan National Airport's 1981-2010 average is 39.71", but doing the same math to update for recent years shows they're running a little wetter too: up to 40.46 inches. Still, that's within our reach, especially if 2017 keeps up and we ...
Early Eastern Washington Trout Opener On Wednesday Will Be Hindered By Freezing Weather Conditions
... (March 1), but it looks like snow, ice and rainy weather conditions could get in the way of a successful outing. “Pretty much all the March 1 lakes are still frozen over with thick ice,” said Chad Jackson, a state Fish and Wildlife biologist in Ephrata. “The only open water is the northern third to half of Martha Lake and all of Lenice Lake.”. For Martha Lake located east of town of George, Jackson points out, anglers should know that there is still a hefty amount of frozen and compact snow in the access sites. Anglers not equipped with a four-wheel drive vehicle might want to park outside the access area along the side of the frontage road. For the Quincy Lakes Area, the main road to the west still has lots of snow on the roadway and deep ruts in places, and state Fish and Wildlife has decided to keep the access closed until conditions permit. But Other West Coast Cities Have Had It Worse
... cities receiving abnormally high levels of rain: San Francisco, Portland and Los Angeles, all of which have received more than 200 percent of their normal precipitation. “Something like this has happened before,’ Felton said, “It just hasn’t happened in a while.”. The rain has brought floods and landslides to cities along the West Coast. Last week, 13 vehicles were trapped when a mudslide dumped up to 2 feet of debris along Interstate 90 east of Issaquah. And the West Point Treatment plant in Magnolia, running at half capacity since a pump failed Feb. 9 and caused catastrophic damage , was forced to dump wastewater into Puget Sound when runoff overwhelmed its diminished treatment capacity. In Northern California, which has recorded its wettest winter on record, rain has caused widespread flooding and an ongoing crisis with the Oroville Dam. So what’s going on. Seattle meteorologist Jay Albrecht said a low-pressure system along the West Coast has stuck around longer than normal. No one knows why, he said. Although there have been a few ...

Seattle is the cloudiest major city in the Lower 48 states — 226 days a year with clouds covering more than three-quarters of the sky. “Where do you think they came with up that title, ‘Fifty Shades of Grey?’” says Buehner about the erotic best-seller that takes place in Seattle. Lenticular or cap clouds form around Mount Rainier. Seattle has a reputation for being rainy, but there are many rainier cities. What really distinguishes our area is the amount of cloudy days. ... strike at the Needle! Wild weather blowing through the city – stay safe, Seattle! __link__/19 bp Ms 97 FO. — Space Needle (@space_needle) February 27, 2017. Monday morning’s surprise snowfall dumped more than 2 inches of snow across parts of the Puget Sound region. The National Weather Service has issued an advisory for accumulations between 1 to 2 inches for Seattle and the Eastside with the heaviest snow at elevations above 300 feet. A convergence zone over the Seattle area brought lower-than-expected temperatures, turning what was forecast to be a mix of snow and rain into mostly snow, said Dustin Guy, meteorologist with the National Weather Service. Rain and snow showers are likely to continue into Tuesday morning, with freezing temperatures overnight expected in the outlying areas of Puget Sound. That could mean some slick roads for the morning commutes Monday and Tuesday, Guy said. The region saw snowfall Sunday night, Monday morning and Monday night, with accumulations across Seattle and in the Bothell and Redmond areas.
