... served as the general manager and vice president in the 1980 s and ’90 s, helping build five Super Bowl-winning squads during that time. The 49 ers inducted John Mc Vay into their Hall of Fame in 2013. Sean Mc Vay, 30, has been regarded around the league as an up-and-coming coaching talent for a couple of years now, but this offseason is his first time interviewing for head coaching openings. He has spent the past seven seasons on Washington’s coaching staff. He started with the team in 2010, as an offensive assistant, and in 2011 was promoted to tight ends coach. He oversaw that position group until 2014, when the Redskins hired Jay Gruden as head coach and promoted Mc Vay to offensive coordinator. Mc Vay took over play-calling duties last season and continued to serve as the primary play-caller this season. This past season, his unit ranked third in the NFL in total offense , averaging 403.4 yards per game, and 12 th in scoring, at 24.8 points. Washington’s main shortcoming this season was in the red zone, however. The team scored touchdowns on only 46 percent of those trips inside the 20 (29 th in the NFL), down from 58.9 percent in 2015 (11 th). The Redskins ...

... along to Steve my thanks for a poignant and incredibly well written article. —Jimmy Robinson. I owe a lot to Steve Tasker for taking the time to remember Bruce. We’re fortunate that one good man at such an emotional time of his life wanted to pay tribute to another good man, and Tasker did it well. SO MUCH STATE FARM. Aaron Rodgers gets paid by State Farm to be a spokesman. The MMQB gets paid by State Farm to be a sponsor. Aaron Rodgers has a heck of a game on Sunday. Peter, please. You have been covering the NFL for a long time and you have been doing it well.  So well that you have managed to build your own business around your trade. Of course you should report on Aaron Rodgers’ exploits.  No apologies or “tricky…cheesy” feelings are necessary.  It is business for you, for Aaron Rodgers, for State Farm, and for the NFL. I think most, if not all, readers of your column understand that money is the underlying driver of the NFL. When did it become politically incorrect to make a living, own/run your own business, be successful, and make a lot of money? In reality, having the ability to make the ...

Interviews Set With Mcvay For Head Coach, Riddick, Raye For Gm

... longtime team executive John Mc Vay to help stabilize the flailing franchise, but they are considering the next-best thing. Team officials have a Monday interview with Washington offensive coordinator Sean Mc Vay – John’s grandson – for their head-coach opening. The younger Mc Vay is only 30 and would be the youngest head coach in NFL history. But he’s viewed as a rising star, and the Los Angeles Rams also will interview him for their vacancy. Under Mc Vay, Washington quarterback Kirk Cousins threw for 4,917 yards – third most in the NFL – to go with 25 touchdowns and 12 interceptions. Cousins is scheduled to be a free agent in March. John Mc Vay, meanwhile, served in the 49 ers’ front office for more than two decades and was part of all five of the team’s Super Bowl championships. During the 2016 season, the 49 ers dedicated their draft room to Mc Vay. His grandson played wide receiver for Miami of Ohio. He got his NFL start under then-Buccaneers coach Jon Gruden in 2008 and has been under Jon’s brother, Jay, in Washington for the past three seasons. The 49 ers also added new names in their search for a general ...

... two other NFL coaches were hired before age 32: Harland Svare, 1962 Rams; Lane Kiffin, 2007 Raiders. The 49 ers have already interviewed three  possible coaches: Anthony Lynn (Buffalo Bills interim coach), Kyle Shanahan (Atlanta Falcons offensive coordinator) and Josh Mc Daniels (New England Patriots OC). Sean Mc Dermott (Carolina Panthers defensive coordinator) is due up Tuesday, and other expected candidates are Vance Joseph (Miami Dolphins defensive coordinator) and Tom Cable (Seattle Seahawks offensive line). “It’s humbling,” Mc Daniels told the Boston Herald about his interviews with the 49 ers, Los Angeles Rams and Jacksonville Jaguars. “It’s a privilege to have an opportunity to do any of those things. I feel very fortunate to have an opportunity to sit in front of those people, that they would listen to me and spend time with me. “Just got to do the best you can to represent yourself, your team, your organization that you come from, your family as best you can, and all the rest of it will play out how it’s supposed to play out.”. Also interviewed Monday was prospective general manager Brandon Beane, who’s been with the Carolina Panthers for 19 years. He ...

Rams Set To Interview Sean Mcvay For Head Coaching Job

... Angeles. And Steve Wilks, the Panthers’ secondary coach who had obtained permission to interview with Washington, is apparently going to stay in Carolina and replace Sean Mc Dermott, the new Bills head coach, as the defensive coordinator there. So where does that leave the Redskins in their hunt for someone to run the defense. MORE REDSKINS: If Mc Vay leaves, don't expect Redskins to hire outsider. —Perhaps with Mike Pettine, the first candidate they interviewed for the job. The news of the meeting didn’t excite many but his resume is rock solid. He has overseen five top-10 defenses in seven seasons as either a head coach or as a coordinator. The Redskins could do much worse than to bring in Pettine. —The search for a new offensive coordinator to replace Mc Vay may not have as much drama attached to it. It ...

Rams Have A New Leading Man In Coach Sean Mcvay

... Redskins offensive coordinator Sean Mc Vay as their new head coach. The Rams featured one of the youngest teams in the NFL last season. Now they have the youngest head coach in league history. On Thursday, the Rams hired 30-year-old Sean Mc Vay, the Washington Redskins ’ offensive coordinator for the past three seasons. The Rams will formally introduce Mc Vay in a news conference Friday at their training facility at Cal Lutheran in Thousand Oaks. “This is a great day as we welcome Sean Mc Vay as our new head coach,” Rams owner Stan Kroenke said in a statement Thursday. “The accomplishments and success that he has had in less than a decade in our league are impressive. “We are confident in his vision to make this team a consistent winner and we will all continue to work together to achieve our ultimate goal — bringing a Rams Super Bowl championship home to Los Angeles.”. Mc Vay, who will turn 31 on Jan. 24, is about eight months younger than Lane Kiffin was when he was hired by the Oakland Raiders in 2007. Mc Vay is essentially in the same age demographic as his players. Rams defensive end William Hayes , at 31, is older than ...

Rams Make Miami Grad Sean Mcvay Youngest Nfl Head Coach

... in NFL history. The Rams on Thursday hired Mc Vay, who turns 31 years old on Jan. 24. Mc Vay, who was born in Dayton, spent the past three seasons as the Washington Redskins’ offensive coordinator. He has been an assistant since 2010 in Washington, where he worked with head coach Jay Gruden to build a prolific offense led by quarterback Kirk Cousins. “Really happy for Sean Mc Vay!” Cousins tweeted. Mc Vay replaces Jeff Fisher, who was fired 13 games into the Rams’ homecoming season in Los Angeles, and interim head coach John Fassel. The Rams finished 4-12 in their 13 th consecutive non-winning season. The Rams made the eye-catching move on the same day that the Chargers announced their relocation to Los Angeles to share the Rams’ $2.6 billion stadium. The Chargers are still without a coach, but the Rams grabbed headlines with one of the most interesting names on the coaching market. Mc Vay wowed the Rams’ top brass during two recent interviews, but he is an unorthodox choice for the franchise, which hasn’t taken many extraordinary risks during owner Stan Kroenke’s tenure. While Mc Vay is respected as ...

Mc Vay, a former collegiate wide receiver at the University of  Miami (OH) , got his first coaching opportunity in the NFL with the  Tampa Bay Buccaneers  in 2008 as an assistant WR coach. Over the last nine years, he's parlayed his experience into becoming one of the most vibrant young offensive minds in the NFL. Why join. Mc Vay worked under  Mike  and  Kyle Shanahan  as Washington's tight ends coach (2011-13), before being promoted to OC by new head coach  Jay Gruden  in 2014, where he's remained. After the failed  Robert Griffin III  experiment, Mc Vay was key in developing  Kirk Cousins , whom the Redskins franchise tagged this past season. Rams Taking A Close Look At Redskins' Mcvay For Head Coach Job
Rams Taking A Close Look At Redskins' Mcvay For Head Coach Job

... has a long list of candidates under consideration for the job including Panthers defensive coordinator Sean Mc Dermott and Falcons offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan. In any case, it looks like Mc Vay has found his way onto the short list in Los Angeles and the Redskins should already be thinking about a replacement. The most obvious candidate is already on the staff. Bill Callahan has been coordinating the running game as well as the offensive line for the last two seasons. They may want to keep him with the O-line every day, though. Quarterbacks coach Matt Cavanaugh was the offensive coordinator for the Bears and Ravens from 1997-2004 so he is another in-house potential candidate. First the Rams named Sean Mc Vay as their new head coach. Then, per a report, the Rams will add Wade Phillips as defensive coordinator. Tough day for the Redskins. Wade Phillips has agreed to terms to become Rams defensive coordinator, per source. — ...
