Four Biggest Determining Factors In Saturday's Games
Four Biggest Determining Factors In Saturday's Games

... for the Zags in the Sweet 16 against West Virginia. “The rim protection that we have this year is different than anything we’ve been able to put out there,” coach Mark Few said. “We’ve got the bulk, the strength, size of Karnowski which allows us to not have to double-team. So then we’re not forced into rotations. “And I’m telling you, the guy that probably makes the biggest difference for us is Johnathan Williams III. He can guard one through five … Just to have somebody that versatile and you’re so comfortable with, you can switch ball screens and things like that, it makes a heck of a difference.”. Gonzaga needs to be firm early on defense against South Carolina and work to convince the Gamecocks their past two sizzling weekends were a fluke. 3. Oregon's shotmaking. Entering the NCAA Tournament, Oregon was shooting 37.7 percent from 3-point range. That’s a top-60 number in that category. Not bad, not ...

Rush Miss Out In Loss To Grizzlies

... of the second period. When Utah got opportunities, they capitalized. The Grizzlies scored 9:27 into the period on another rebound as Mike Pelech willed the puck in to give Utah a 2-1 lead. Only a minute after Pelech scored, he was called for a high sticking penalty and the Rush went on their first power play of the night. Only 28 seconds into the power play, however, Terrence Wallin was also called for high-sticking. Neither team was able to score as a result of the penalties. Just a few minutes later, however, Pelech scored again, slipping the puck by Morrison’s left side from almost point-blank range. The goal came 13:11 into the period. The period ended with Pelech being part of the action again. He got into a fight with Hunter Fejes with 34.7 seconds to go and started the period with Fejes in the penalty box. The Rush had a point blank opportunity to cut into the lead 8:04 into the final period, but Boyle was able to stop the shot. He finished ...

... and just the willingness to play defense. They're unbelievable now—they rotate, guys talk, they switch and they don't have weaknesses. Even [7'1" center] Przemek [Karnowski] can move his feet in ballscreen defense and keep his hands high. We tried to play defense, but we just weren't very good at it. SI: You used to wear a t-shirt that famously denigrated defense, right? What did it say again. Morrison: It said, "IF IT WASN'T FOR OFFENSE, I'D PLAY DEFENSE." My dad gave that to me when I was a kid. It was one of those old, '70 s t-shirts, and I wish I still had it, because it's awesome. It's one of those t-shirts that just fits. I used to wear it in pickup games when I played; it probably didn't go over well, but we were good at scoring. SI: Are there any other NCAA tournament stories or memories that you don't get asked about as much as UCLA, but have stuck with you. Morrison: One of my ...

Gonzaga President Thayne Mcculloh Sees Bulldogs’ History, Success Tied To Community

... community who might have believed that this is possible until, maybe until this year, and until this tremendous run,” Mc Culloh said. “But this community has supported … this program for a long time.”. Over the years, Mc Culloh has watched the city stick by the Zags and the university, even after the tough losses and disappointing endings. For decades, Spokane has stood behind the Zags as they grew into the national spotlight. The local fans made sure all the home games were sold out. They donated to the program, to grow it and watch it thrive in person inside the Kennel. The fans were there when the Zags went to the Elite Eight in 1999, the first time in school history. They were they there when Arizona edged GU by one point in double overtime that ended Gonzaga’s 2003 run in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. They watched Adam Morrison lay on the court and cry after the Zags fell to UCLA in the 2006 Sweet 16 – Morrison’s last game in a Zags uniform. Then there was 2013, when the city of ...

Where Did This Gonzaga Team Come From? Well, Everywhere

... 3-pointer followed by a pair of buckets from Karnowski restored the Bulldogs' lead, which they never relinquished. And finally with the game on the line, Killian Tillie , a freshman from France who played only the final 12 seconds of the second half, calmly stepped to the free throw line and sunk both to ice the biggest victory in Gonzaga history. "Of course I was [nervous],' Tillie said. "I was kind of nervous when I was on the free throw line. I just didn't think about anything.". Playing Tournament Challenge? Don't forget to check your brackets! Bracket busted? We have you covered with a Second Chance Bracket. It might be the only time this team has been nervous all season. Despite its unique combination of personalities, Gonzaga has more than stared down its challenges this year; it's dared them. The Players' Tribune
The Players' Tribune

... at some point it has nothing to do with the players. It’s about the position the players are put in. Coach Few has the ability to recognize the strengths of the guys on his team and then adjust his system to fit them best. Every season I played at Gonzaga, Coach Few took a slightly different approach to the team. He never let his ego get in the way of doing what’s best for his players. And even though he’s been very successful for a very long time, he’s never decided to leave for a bigger program. Instead, he decided to create something bigger right here in Spokane. Coach Few gave us this confidence in each other. As individual players we were good — but as a team we were as good as anybody. I think I’ve always connected deeply with Gonzaga because I see a lot of myself in the program. When we walk into a gym, we may not look like much. During warmups, you might assume we’re overrated. But as soon as the ball is tipped, you’re in for a fight, ...
