... than a quarter-century, Pastor Hellner-Burris has been at the forefront of fighting for peace and justice in Wilkinsburg. She was among the clergy and other Wilkinsburg community leaders who united for anti-violence marches and educational, social and athletic programs that aided in eradicating gang violence in the early 1990 s. But in 2016, violence returned to the community with 12 homicides — more than double the 2015 mark and 11.4 percent of the 105 slayings for all of Allegheny County. Pastor Hellner-Burris said “waves” of violence periodically have reappeared since the early 1990 s, and she hopes and prays that 2016 may have been one of those outliers. Included in last year’s total was the March 9 ambush/massacre of three siblings, two of their cousins and an unborn child at a backyard cookout in which three others were wounded. In April, Pastor Hellner-Burris led a blessing service at the Franklin Avenue killing field that included members of all faiths, races, ages. “Hate won’t win. Love is the way through this tragedy,” she said at the service, echoing the ...

... half brown-skinned. The woman said her parents were moving from Concord, N. H., to Athens, Ga., at the time. “They didn’t want me to be afraid of the black culture,” she said. Another aspect of the dolls in Lawrence’s painting looked familiar – one was missing a head. Mc Intyre noted that any child who played with a Barbie doll probably had this experience, too, but the painting takes on additional meaning. “Here it takes a really poignant message – the dolls start to play out the racial tension,” she said. Not all the artworks in Saturday’s tour were so somber. Townsend led the group to a 2005 work called Rotunda Unwound, by Sam Gilliam. It consisted of a massive piece fabric draped across the wall, brightly colored with acrylic paint on muslin cloth. One tour participant thought it might be a rainbow flag. Townsend suggested the shape resembled a happy face. Mc Intyre said the ambiguity of contemporary art is what makes it so great for creating open dialogue among museumgoers. Thinking of the ideas evoked by Rotunda Unwound, Mc Intyre later said, “It’s a ...

On Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Let's Resolve To Renew Our Common Humanity

... good, the fact remains that we are closer now than we were even 10 years ago to achieving consensus and progress on racial, gender, and sexual equality, universal access to healthcare, and environmental stewardship. President Obama's farewell speech eloquently touched on the substance of that argument, but I think many of us still feel like we're not there yet in terms of appreciating his words. For me, I've struggled deeply with the ramifications of what happened two months ago (and what could happen over the next four years), but I also know that I'm still in a much better place than I was growing up and being called the n-word and dothead. I know I have evolved and will continue to evolve, just as I have in changing from a homophobic misogynist to a feminist and straight ally. All of us evolve in different ways, and societies change, even if progress can't come soon enough for many. We must continue striving for a better America, and be prepared to accept that the change we wish to see might not come in our lifetimes, or in ways different than what we predict. King knew that, and ...

My Prayer On Martin Luther King Jr. Day
My Prayer On Martin Luther King Jr. Day

... said as they shook their heads, clenched their fists and lamented. TOP JOBS. Then someone turned to the new young preacher in town, fresh from a great run at Morehouse and Boston University, and asked him to say a word. At first he spoke quietly, almost hesitatingly. Then his speech picked up volume. People get tired, he told them, tired of being beaten down, scorned. There comes a time when tired people have had enough. They rise up; they act. "We have no alternative but to protest," the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. said in a speech the next night. "For many years we have shown an amazing patience. We have sometimes given our white brothers the feeling that we liked the way we were being treated. But we come here tonight to be saved from that patience that makes us patient with anything less than freedom and justice.". As a participant at that night's meeting said, ...

Timeless Message For A New Age
Timeless Message For A New Age

... addressed the charged state of affairs across the country, while also celebrating his legacy. “We’re anxious about the state of race relations in this country and wanted to show support,” said Ralph Steven, who attended Sunday afternoon's march and subsequent service with his wife, Maryellen. The Annual Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Service of Commemoration and Silent March began at Barnstable Town Hall, where the approximately 100 attendees gathered before marching to the Federated Church of Hyannis for the service. Members of the Cape Cod Chapter of the NAACP, Hyannis West Elementary School students and other Cape residents were in attendance. The service fittingly focused on modern race relations, politics and other issues, in addition to Dr. King’s message. “I think today one of our greatest freedoms is being threatened; it’s the freedom from fear. I’ve heard so many people talk about how they’re genuinely frightened,” Federated Church Rev. Dr. John A. Terry said. “They’re frightened because they’re Muslims, they’re frightened because they’re women, they’re frightened because they’re Jews, they’re frightened because they’re gay.”. - ...
