Silence’ Is A Passion Project That Goes On Forever

... when pressed for an explanation as to why we got none). There was a junket but it was small and hard to get into, but the comments coming out of those small groups of people that saw Silence was ‘it’s long’. There are a lot of movies that are long and don’t suffer for it. No matter how long a movie is you shouldn’t feel compelled to check your watch to check the time; you should be so engaged that the time doesn’t matter. The Martian is only seventeen minutes shorter than Silence but you don’t notice how long The Martian is because it is always engaging and entertaining. There were moments of engagement in Silence but not enough to justify that running time. The movie has a lot to say about Western expansion and the idea of forcing ideals on foreign people, and while it tries to be as balanced as possible there were moments that still felt like we were seeing this story told through the wrong eyes. The movie is focused on finding the mentor of our two priests played by Liam Neeson and Andrew Garfield, and without spoiling everything what they ultimately went through turned out to be much more interesting than the story the ...

Deadpool Is Now A More Serious Oscar Contender Than Scorsese's Silence, And Ryan Reynolds Knows It

... numerous boasts - along with "42 rejection letters from Fox.". Ryan Reynolds in Deadpool Credit: Fox. Deadpool had a laborious history prior to its production, 20 th Century Fox reluctant to greenlight the so-called anti-superhero movie, with its adult themes, copious amounts of swearing, and fourth-wall breaking. They financed the production of test footage, a short clip featuring Ryan Reynolds in the part and designed to sell director Tim Miller's vision, but the studio ultimately declined to develop it further. But, following widespread acclaim after the footage leaked online in 2014, Fox finally greenlit the project. It ended up being a worthwhile risk, Deadpool winding up the 9 th most successful movie of 2016, and a sequel currently in production. Reynolds' open letter to Oscar voters, mailed out in November. On the awards front, Deadpool bagged two Golden Globes nominations, for Best Picture and Best Actor (both in the Comedy/Musical categories), as well as four nods at the Broadcast Film Critics Association Awards, a nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay at the Writers Guild of America Awards, as well ...

Silence’ Is Martin Scorsese’s Theological Thriller
Silence’ Is Martin Scorsese’s Theological Thriller

... burning, although their confused flock doesn’t see their religion, or the Christian God, in the way the church teaches. The film becomes edgier in short order. The Jesuits look from their secret hiding place to see the villagers persecuted and brutalized by the shogun’s troops. Those who refuse to reject their faith by publicly trampling on the fumie, a bronze image of Christ, are killed. The always fascinating Garfield is excellent once again as the determined yet vulnerable protagonist, capturing the anguished mind of Rodrigues and bringing him fully to life. He carries much of the film on his own shoulders, giving everything to the role, and it shows. “Silence,” co-written by Scorsese and his frequent collaborator Jay Cocks, presents deep questions and shuns answers. God’s refusal to reply when humanity suffers is an enigma that eludes understanding, and the film presents it in a way that speaks to the devout and nonbelievers alike. Scene by magnificently sculpted scene, the film lifts difficult themes to eye level and challenges us to unfold them. This is a religious film with ...

... full review. Arrival   Amy Adams stars in this elegant, involving science-fiction drama that is simultaneously old and new, revisiting many alien-invasion conventions but with unexpected intelligence, visual style and heart. (Kenneth Turan) PG-13. The Eagle Huntress A portrait of a 13-year-old Kazakh girl from Mongolia who defies eons of tradition by learning to hunt with fierce golden eagles is a documentary so satisfying it makes you feel good about feeling good. (Kenneth Turan) G. The Edge of Seventeen Hailee Steinfeld gives a superb performance as a high-school misfit in Kelly Fremon Craig's disarmingly smart teen dramedy, the rare coming-of-age picture that feels less like a retread than a renewal. (Justin Chang) R. Elle Paul Verhoeven’s brilliantly booby-trapped thriller starring Isabelle Huppert is a gripping whodunit, a tour de force of psychological suspense and a wickedly droll comedy of manners. (Justin Chang) R. The Handmaiden The most absorbing feature in years from South Korean director Park Chan-wook (“Oldboy”) is a teasingly witty and elegant puzzle-box of a thriller about ...

Martin Scorsese's 'silence' Is Easier To Admire Than To Love
Martin Scorsese's 'silence' Is Easier To Admire Than To Love

... Inoue, cunningly played by Issey Ogata, explains: “We learned from our mistakes. Killing priests only makes them stronger.” Another interrogator puts it still more directly when Rodrigues insists that the victims around him “didn’t die for nothing.” “No,” he replies. “They died for you.”. But for all the torments they inflict, the Japanese inquisitors are no generic movie villains. They truly believe that Christianity is incompatible with the Japanese spirit, an alien pathogen imported by arrogant and incurious Europeans. And the film gives this case its due. It is notable, for instance, that none of the Jesuits we encounter speaks more than a tiny smattering of Japanese, but peasants and inquisitors alike manage to make themselves understood in Portuguese (rendered in the film as English). One of Rodrigues’s captors—played superbly by Tadanobu Asano—is fluent enough to function as a full-time translator. Indeed, one of the chief weaknesses of Silence is that so many of the characters in orbit around Rodrigues convey more narrative gravity than he does himself: Asano’s translator, Ogata’s inquisitor, Kubozuka’s fickle ...

Andrew Garfield On Silence And ‘this Sick Man’ Donald Trump
Andrew Garfield On Silence And ‘this Sick Man’ Donald Trump

... at someone like Van Jones and I'm super-inspired with what he's doing with the messy truth by staying within the tension of the debate, by not taking any easy way out, and by allowing emotions to be there, by allowing misunderstanding to be there until some kind of common ground is reached. That common ground only gets reached, we find out, through difficult discussion and very hot emotional exchange. Ultimately, I believe — and I think this is ancient wisdom, really — if you stay in the tension, something will break and crack open and some healing can happen and some meeting can occur. So I have no idea, but I'm desperate to understand. I'm desperate to understand how these men and women have voted so against their own interests and how easy it has been to manipulate a very disenfranchised portion of the population. You watch Kellyanne Goebbels — sorry, I mean Kellyanne Conway — on Seth ...

Silence’ Is Not An Easy Movie To Watch With Its Graphic Torture Scenes

... cast. As the Inquisitor, Issei Ogata is a marvel of cunning and cruelty. Tadanobu Asano is chilling as the unsympathetic interpreter and Yosuke Kobozuka is impressive as the weak and duplicitous guide Kichijiro. As the two young Jesuits, Andrew Garfield and Adam Driver work best together. They both lost a considerable amount of weight to look emaciated, and maintain their accents. Liam Neeson is barely in the film, and his height makes him an imposing figure when he is. What Works: Obviously, much skill and thoughtful details went into this massive, arduous project. The labor is evident. Rodrigo Prieto’s cinematography is stunning, and Dante Ferretti’s meticulous production design is striking, whether it’s the grim peasant villages or the shogun grandeur of the ruling class. One can only imagine what a difficult shoot this film was, in a harsh environment and with its medieval setting. What Doesn’t Work: Of course, the dramatic intensity is necessary with such subject matter, but must we watch extensive ...

... and yes, star-crossed love. The verdict: See it. Early word has been less than complementary, but based on the power of the novel alone, I say give it your full attention. Quick Cuts. "Monster Trucks" (Wide Release) — Lucas Till, Amy Ryan, Barry Pepper, directed by Chris Wedge. Skip it: If you want to get the kids out of the house this weekend, "Monster Trucks" is your only option. But this tale of a young man, his truck and a kindly monster is entirely forgettable. "Sleepless" (Wide Release) — Jamie Foxx, Michelle Monaghan, Dermot Mulroney, directed by Baran bo Odar. Skip it: This ho-hum story of a cop going undercover in a nightclub to find his son is an example of the typical January-to-March movie lull when studios purge their weakest offerings.
