Panel To Discuss Selena's Impact On Latinas In Entertainment
... women in entertainment. "It was Suzette's idea. She and I had been talking about doing something together (at the festival) and the three of us had been together at the unveiling of the wax figure back in August," said Guerra, who will moderate the panel. "The idea (of the panel) is how Selena has become this great role model for generations who really didn't know her in life.". Guerra said Cruz is the "living, breathing example" of a woman who has been influenced by Selena despite being a young girl when the Tejano singer was killed more than 20 years ago. Guerra said she burst into tears when she saw a magazine article describing Cruz's character on the Netflix series. "This woman who wrote the article said 'One of the coolest things about her character is she's a Latina who listens to The Smiths ,' " Guerra said. "I screen shot the magazine, sent it to a bunch of my friends. I said 'Look how far we've come,' because we paved the way for this.". Guerra was the first Latina to star in a network sitcom, " First Time Out ," which aired 12 episodes on the WB in 1995. It was billed as the Latino " Living ...
Survivor' Host Jeff Probst Weighs In On The Most Chaotic Tribal Council Ever
... everybody was on edge. Finally, you reach a point where it’s time to vote, which is the same as showing your cards. You take a deep breath and write down a name and hope you’re right. RELATED: Ranking Every Season of Survivor. BONUS QUESTION: Malcolm looked legitimately shell-shocked and we actually saw him shed some tears in his final words. How would you describe his reaction to what went down. I think you described it really well. He never saw it coming. How could he? How could anybody in Malcolm’s shoes ever anticipate it would be them? Things were going so well for him, too. That’s part of the reason it was so devastating. And make no mistake, that was as devastating for Malcolm as you imagine it to be. Like every other player, he had to give up so much to come back out and play again and to go out like that and that early has to be maddening. MADDENING. Everything is swirling around you, you are doing your best to stay “in” the conversation and you end up unknowingly being betrayed by the one guy who you thought you could ...
Missing Richard Simmons And The Queasiness Of Deep-dive Entertainment Journalism
... make a grand gesture of love. She sent it back. Taberski says that this podcast is such a gesture—a message to Simmons from the people who love him, who didn’t get to say goodbye. But Simmons didn’t accept it as such. In the final episode, Simmons’s manager tells Taberski that it caused “more worry and speculation.” “I can’t say that Richard feels better as a result of the podcast,” he says. If this is a ring, Simmons sent it back. Recently, a friend told me about another armchair-detective podcast he’s listened to—a shambling one, he said, possibly a bit grotesque, that seemed to be dragging itself out, collecting fancy sponsors long after it had worn out its theories and its welcome. “Missing Richard Simmons” was not that. To Taberski’s credit, he planned for six episodes, and kept that promise, even after it hit No. 1 on i Tunes and people started comparing it to “Serial.” More important, in the end, both podcast and subject seem to have moved closer to sanity. (You can’t help suspecting that the backlash helped inspire Taberski to reel it in a bit.) In the end, Simmons, on some level, ...

Wynn Resorts Ltd. Vs. Caesars Entertainment
... said that Caesars Entertainment properties, which includes Flamingo, Harrah's Atlantic City, Harrah's Las Vegas, Harrah's Laughlin, Paris Las Vegas, Rio, LINQ Promenade, and the Octavious Tower at Caesars Palace generated $163 million EBITDA combined. It took 8 resorts, most of which are on the Las Vegas Strip, to beat the $114.6 million in EBITDA Wynn Las Vegas generated in the quarter. If we look at Caesars Growth Partners, which includes Caesars Interactive, Bally's, The Cromwell, Harrah's New Orleans, Horseshoe Baltimore, Planet Hollywood in Las Vegas, and the LINQ Hotel the EBITDA number is $93 million for the quarter. Again, despite four large Las Vegas properties being included in the results the properties are not nearly as profitable as Wynn Las Vegas. This doesn't include Caesars Entertainment Operating Company's results, primarily because the subsidiary ...

Mindless Entertainment Or The Last Remnant Of Classical Civilization
... a vacation in Disneyworld or on Bankrupt. The intellectual acumen of the contestants does little to decide whether you walk away with a Camry or a $99 toaster. Life here is guided by the blindfolded Dame Fortune through a wheel that suddenly turns kings into paupers. Life here is opaque, unreasonable and inscrutable. “Wheel of Fortune” points to a less rational world where goodness is often ignored and evil often triumphs. Rather than being a recent outcropping of American pop culture at its most vulgar, “Wheel of Fortune” is arguably our clearest survival of classical civilization. The goddess Fortuna presided over the wheel in Roman mythology, raining down health and illness, wealth and poverty, glory and disgrace in unpredictable turns of fate. There was no discernable pattern to the work of the wheel. Reversals of ...
Alibaba Acquires Damai For Entertainment Boost
... up its time to market. To that end, Alibaba’s corporate venture arm has been active in recent years, investing in potentially complementary businesses such as Damai and others that fit its expansionary strategy. For example, it invested in Qyer ’s $60 million round in early 2016. Qyer is a China-based online social network for travel enthusiasts that enables them to exchange photos, experiences, and notes about their travel. It’s not difficult to see Qyer expanding into offering travel bookings after growing its social network and being acquired by Alibaba when it reaches a certain level of market penetration. Alibaba has also invested in China’s dominant ride sharing service, Kuaidi Group. Notably, Alibaba invested twice in private funding rounds for online retailer __link__ but was beat to the punch by Wal-Mart’s (NYSE: WMT ) acquisition of Jet in 2016. Corporate investments don’t always signal intent to acquire, but they do provide companies like Alibaba with internal market ...
