... the Conservation Corps in 2006 with his wife, Sandy Bonilla. Both passionately believed in the brilliant workforce program that created work-with-pay opportunities for inner-city kids who would most likely fall through the cracks. Sandy, Bobby’s widow, carries on his work as Urban Conservation Corps director. “We continue to work with young people from the Inland Empire, helping them to stay out of trouble and encouraging them to do something with their lives,” Sandy said. Under her guidance, the corps has expanded. “We have expanded our crews into the Angeles and Cleveland National Forests, as well as the San Bernardino National Forest,” Sandy said. “But San Bernardino has always been our home base.”. The corps also has expanded into the Coachella Valley. With about 100 young men and women, the conservation projects include clearing trails, planting trees and restoring habitat. Public lands win and young people win because of the values and work ethic instilled in them. According to Sandy, discipline is the key. “Any time you offer discipline, you have success,” she said. ... Cesar Foundation. César Chávez Street. In Austin, the street formerly known as First Street, which runs from Mo Pac to U. S. 183, was renamed in 1993 to honor the union organizer and Hispanic rights activist who died that year. Girard Kinney, an architect who helped create the Great Streets Master Plan in downtown Austin, remembers the resistance that came with the name change. Kinney said he was a strong supporter of bringing César Chávez Street to Austin. “There’s always been a valid opposition to renaming numbered streets,” he said. “If you say First and Congress, everyone knows intuitively what you’re talking about.”. In Texas alone, roadways in San Antonio, Lubbock, San Juan, Houston, El Paso, Dallas and Edinburg have been renamed after César Chávez. Many farm workers are paid “off the books” or not actually paid what the books represent. Many receive less than the $7.25 federal minimum wage; and there is no time-and-half provision for more than 40 hours/week. Within Texas, some 200,000 farm workers migrate around the state during the year. They live in awful migrant housing or camps, often characterized by shacks in which an entire family must live in appalling sanitary conditions. Exposure to dangerous pesticides and herbicides is widespread. Sometimes, workers are charged for their housing or forced to live in local decrepit motel rooms at their expense. Only domestic workers earn less pay than the farm employees. Even though there are some federal laws protecting agricultural employees, they are haphazardly enforced; ...

Although some point to Chavez’s controversial sentiments against undocumented workers espoused earlier on in his career, it was due to his fear that employers would exploit undocumented workers by hiring them as "strike-breakers" to derail farm workers’ and unions’ organizing efforts. In his later years, Chavez committed to a pro-amnesty stance along with the UFW for their undocumented "brothers and sisters,” reflecting a broader shift of mentality among older generations of Chicano labor leaders at the time. In the last several years, problems associated with the holiday, when students and other partygoers take advantage of the day off from school, have been minimal. “We’ve been getting lucky,” Aldridge said. “These events have been kind of quiet for the last couple of years.
