Will Sean Miller Take Over For Roy Williams As Unc Basketball Coach
Will Sean Miller Take Over For Roy Williams As Unc Basketball Coach

... bizarre. Essentially, Archie Miller was connected to the N. C. State vacancy as soon as the Wolfpack brass announced they would fire Mark Gottfried, but Miller adamantly denied ever having contact with anyone in Raleigh. Late last week, it became abundantly clear Archie wasn't going to take the job, and Giglio's report claims that decision was made (in some small part) because the Dayton front man didn't want to compete in the same conference as his brother one day. Obviously it would be tough to battle against your brother on the recruiting trail and during the season, but did Archie really turn down the job because of that. Probably not. N. C. State is a tough place to win and there will be plenty of other strong jobs the younger Miller can choose from. Dayton's recent success has turned Archie into one of the hottest names in college basketball. Either way, during the midst of one coaching search, it looks like we ...

Roy Williams Addresses Timeout Criticism During Pre-ncaa Tournament Press Conference
Roy Williams Addresses Timeout Criticism During Pre-ncaa Tournament Press Conference

... how he prepares his players for situations where a timeout could come into play. He explained his stance on calling timeouts by telling a story. “I had a player one time tell me, coach, you call a time out, I’m going to panic,” Coach Roy explained. “I don’t want my players panicking.” He then talked about a very specific in-game scenario he creates every practice where the team is down by 6 points and have to come back from the deficit with three minutes to go. He even made a joke about how if they were playing Virginia the next day he would make it 66-60 instead of 86-80. It is easy to criticize as fans and as the media, however, it is also easy to forget that teams practice these types of situations all the time. The way that Roy has conditioned this North Carolina squad, as he has many of his teams, is how to overcome adversity without using timeouts. Near the end of his statement, Roy did say: “One year we played Billy Tubbs when we won at – maybe it was TCU. Yeah, I think it was…so I made it 96-90. And we beat the dog crap out of them. They were the leading scoring team in the ...

Roy Williams Speaks Again On House Bill 2

... championships Dan Gavitt condemned the flag in a statement Sunday. “We are committed to assuring that our events are safe and accessible to all,” Gavitt said. “No symbols that compromise that commitment will be permitted to be displayed on venue property that the tournament controls.”. Andrews said the Greenville games show how sports and politics align. “People have been saying for 100 years that sports and politics can’t mix — that sports are a respite from politics, they’re an escape from politics and this is why we like them,” he said. “But anyone who says that just is not paying attention.”. HB 2 caused the NCAA to relocate the games, as well as  six other championship events , from North Carolina for the 2016-17 academic year. The NCAA said the bill’s provisions eliminating LGBTQ civil rights protections contradicted its ...

Roy Williams' Philosphy On Calling Timeouts
Roy Williams' Philosphy On Calling Timeouts

... the blankety-blank-blank you want to call it. Williams’ ideas on timeouts are deeper and more thought out than you might imagine. “I call them when I want to,” he said. And there you have it. That’s the whole Roy Williams viewpoint on when a coach should call a timeout. Of course, it took him 15 minutes to fully explain. “What my philosophy is is the same dadgum philosophy I’ve had for 29 years,” he said. “I call them when I want to. And I don’t care what the blankety-blank-blank anybody says. I’ll give you an example. ”. The example was from 26 years ago. Williams has thought a lot about this in the last few days, in part because people keep asking him about it and in part because coaches hate more than anything to be questioned about anything, especially from, well, anybody. “Before half of you were ...

Roy Williams Rips Trump’s ‘bs’ In Response To Boeheim’s Acc Dig

... York, in the techno age, no longer has the one and only center for information – or recruits. “It used to be much more so than I think it is now. Now everybody’s has got social media,” Williams said. “Our president tweets out more [BS] than anybody I’ve ever seen. “In the old days, there’s no question it was the media capital of the world, but I’m not sure it is right now. Media capital of the world is sitting right there, right there, right there,” Williams said, pointing to media members with smart phones and laptops. Miami coach Jim Larranaga weighed in and said the appeal of New York is undeniable. “I coached in the ACC …’79 to ’86, and I thought it was the best basketball league in the country then. For a majority of my years there, we played it in Greensboro,” Larranaga said. “To me, the ACC Tournament, no matter where it’s played, is a tremendous event and deserves the recognition that it does get. “But the fact of the matter is New York City is the capital of college basketball, starting back when CCNY and LIU were winning national titles, and kids were growing up in the city and becoming All-Americans and NBA players. So to ...

Facebook Creator Mark Zuckerberg Meets With Roy Williams, Coach K
Facebook Creator Mark Zuckerberg Meets With Roy Williams, Coach K

... Zuckerberg, the creator of Facebook who is worth, oh, $56 billion or so, continued his tour of America on Monday and met with the North Carolina basketball team and coach Roy Williams. Zuckerberg also stopped in Durham and did the same with Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski and his team. Williams during his weekly radio show spoke highly of Zuckerberg's visit. Williams said that during his coaching career he's met presidents and celebrities, but that he'd never shaken hands with someone worth $56.7 billion. That sort of money, Williams said, would buy a lot of rounds of golf. Zuckerberg is traveling around the country to complete his annual “personal challenge,” as he described it in a Facebook post on Jan. 3. In recent years, those challenges have included things like running 365 miles, or reading 25 books. This year Zuckerberg's challenge is “to have visited and met people in every state in the US by the end of the year.” To complete that challenge Zuckerberg wrote he'd need to travel to about 30 states this year. Monday, apparently, was North Carolina's turn. Zuckerberg is doing this “to get out and talk to more people about how they're living, working ...

What Roy Williams And His Players Had To Say After The Uk-north Carolina Game
What Roy Williams And His Players Had To Say After The Uk-north Carolina Game

... any kind of criticism, he’s a little tough nut. He’s out there with both feet not feeling really good. Even when we got on the court and they were jumping around and then when they were doing the alma mater and everybody was stomping their feet, the two of us were standing beside each other. I said I’m not stomping. He said, I’m not, either. He’s got two bad ankles; I’ve got two bad knees. Q. Has it sunk in that you guys just won a regional on something like the same play you just lost the national championship on last year. ROY WILLIAMS: One of the kids said something about that as we were going to the locker room. But he also said something about Kentucky because Malik made that big three when we played Kentucky in Vegas earlier. Same scenario, you think about this. In the Kentucky game, we missed a free throw, and Malik goes down and makes a big one. And we miss the free throw tonight, and they go down and make one another, but we still have time ourselves to get a shot off. One of the kids said something about it, and at first I thought he was talking about the national championship game, and ...

Celebrating Roy Williams, The Man Who Forced Dallas' Leaders To Look More Like Dallas' Population
Celebrating Roy Williams, The Man Who Forced Dallas' Leaders To Look More Like Dallas' Population

... Dallas figure in the 1980 s and '90 s in the fight for representation and an increase in minority leadership than Williams, who with Marvin Crenshaw, filed and won a federal lawsuit that led to a new system of electing the City Council. Williams, 74, died Saturday of complications from a stroke at the Dallas VA Medical Center. Folks of a certain age here easily remember him as an imposing fixture in the City Council chambers. He was among the outspoken civil rights leaders who challenged, verbally jostled with and rankled the powers that be. Roy Williams, 74, co-plaintiff in suit that created Dallas' 14-1 City Council system, led to election of minorities. Williams and Crenshaw had the audacity to make their voices heard — and in the process changed Dallas in profound ways, bringing more minorities to serve on the council, boards and commissions. A city government that had been run by whites was now more reflective of its growing minority population. Their landmark 1988 suit led to Dallas' ...

Roy Williams Has Never Quite Gotten His Due, But He's Outdoing Even Himself At Unc
Roy Williams Has Never Quite Gotten His Due, But He's Outdoing Even Himself At Unc

... the Tar Heels will still be nothing less than ACC co-champions - which means Williams has now won ACC regular-season championships eight times in the past 13 years. That’s eight ACC titles in 13 years. Mike Krzyzewski has two in the same timeframe. And that sentence is not designed to discount the greatness of Krzyzewski. He’s the GOAT, far as I’m concerned, based on the fact that he’s won five national titles in three different decades, built Duke into the biggest brand in college basketball and maintained it with different rosters and different styles. He’s tremendous. So when I write that Williams has won eight ACC regular-season titles in the past 13 years while Krzyzewski has only won two, I don’t want you to wonder what’s wrong with the latter as much as I want you to recognize how incredible the former has been. Because Roy Williams has been incredible. Everyone listens when North Carolina’s Roy Williams is talking. USATSI. Again, he’s now won eight ACC regular-season titles in the past 13 years. No other school has won more than three in that same timeframe. No other coach has won more than two. In four of the ...

Unc's Roy Williams References Phone Booths, Describes Generational Gap With Players

... Williams' antiquated cultural references. Phone booths. Mr. Miyagi. What to make of those, and other things that Williams might say. “There's a lot of them that we just say yes, sir and move on,” said Justin Jackson, the junior forward, “even though we might not know what's going on. But I guess that's just kind of the different times.”. It was then when Kennedy Meeks, the senior forward, interjected. He has spent four years now around Williams, and has likely heard it all. Meeks' assessment: “He's not of our day and age.”. Williams broke out in laughter then. So did Jackson. So did UNC's other four starters on the dais. They were laughing, partly, because of Meeks' comedic timing, but also because what Meeks said is what Williams often tells his players: That he's from a different time. “That's an inside joke,” Williams said. “I tell them all the time, 'I am not of your generation,' and I like that. None of these guys have ever been in a phone booth.”. Unless they'd happened to walk into one in a museum. Or maybe somewhere in some old, ...
