... by country fair. It was called Los Dinos, and its members included Quintanilla siblings A. B. on bass and Suzette on drums. Later, Chris Pérez would join them on guitar, and the professional relationship would lead to romance and eventually, marriage with Selena. But back then, it was the Quintanilla kids, on an endless bus that they thought would eventually take them to stardom. They were a humble family from Texas, and perhaps, because they were poor, and also, because music ran through Abraham Qintanilla’s veins, they figured there was nothing to lose. “It’s the American dream, to take nothing and make it into something,” says A. B. Quintanilla, when asked about his sister’s enduring appeal. “The story applies to any angle in life. And the most important thing is the music, of course.”. In the beginning, the music was, for the most part, Tejano cumbias. Basic stuff, but catchy, infectious. A. B. Quintanilla, a man with a knack for penning ...

It didn't take long before Selena started getting recognized by her fans on the street, but her encounter with these two cholos is pretty epic. Being Mexican-American is tough. ... to tell her story correctly and to give it that heart.”. Finally, after reading a biography about the singer, a lightbulb went off for Moctesuma. “I saw that the family was the driving force behind the success of Selena. Her brother, her sister, her father, her mother, had been touring and making music since she was a little girl, and building on the history of her father Abraham, who had had a band when he was a teenager.”. The story of the Quintanilla family was the story of the American Dream, of people who confronted racism with determination and reached success on their own terms. This was a story that could do Selena justice — and a way to stay true to his mission of making movies that broke with Hollywood’s stereotypical representation of Latinos. It is notoriously hard to get investors to hand over money for a project involving an all-Latino cast. Movie studios are not risk-takers. They dump ...

... may have been poised to become a huge crossover artist at the time of her 1995 murder, and “Selena” helped make Lopez a huge star. But especially when it comes to film and television, the entertainment industry still doesn’t seem to know what to do not merely with Mexican-Americans but with Hispanics and Latinos, and Hispanic and Latino culture, more generally. “Selena” gave Lopez a highly unusual role: She got to play a woman whose girlish softness and attention to domestic life were in no way in conflict with her will and ambition. And Lopez gave “Selena” precisely what it needed: a hugely compelling musical and acting performance that meant director and writer Gregory Nava never had to stop and explain why Selena Quintanilla was such a remarkable artist and important cultural figure. Every time Lopez is on screen, whether she’s wearing the heck out of a Holstein-print bolero jacket or blowing off a racist saleswoman at an upscale Los Angeles dress shop, Quintanilla’s appeal and fame are obvious, incandescent. And the chemistry between Lopez and Jon Seda, who plays Chris Pérez, the lead ...

For Its Fourth Annual Selena Party, Country Burger Is Getting A Selena Mural

... to overstate Selena’s impact, particularly on Latin communities. The artista del pueblo had stunning crossover appeal, a fact she proved in 1995 when "Dreaming of You" debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Top 200. Selena already conquered the Latin charts and was prepared to do the same in mainstream music when a stalker killed her on March 31, 1995. But the mark she made on Tejano music and its subculture remains indelible. So every March, near the anniversary of her death, Dallas celebrates. Rafael Tamayo is one of the organizers of #214 Selena, the 4 th annual celebration happening Saturday at Country Burger — which is a year-round Selena shrine. Per usual, the event will be hosted by Faded Dee Jays and there will be a Selena lookalike contest in which contestants are also free to sing, dance or “do anything creative.” Tamayo played the kid version of Selena’s brother, A. B. Quintanilla, in the 1997 biopic film. "Even now, 20 years later, after she’s gone and we don’t have any music from her, there’s still so much that she’s contributing to the landscape," Tamayo says. "There are new producers and new artists that are kind of reinventing the ...

Social Media Is Getting Really Confused About This #ripselena Hashtag

... fans unfamiliar with Tejano icon Selena Quintanilla were alarmed when they saw that the hashtag #RIPSelena was trending worldwide. They were concerned that the 24-year-old celebrity had abruptly passed away. But upon further inspection, it's clear that the viral movement wasn't to grieve Selena Gomez, who is definitely OK. Instead, it was meant to be a tribute to Mexican-American singer Selena Quintanilla, as the day marks 22 years since her untimely death. Meanwhile, Selena Quintanilla holds a special place in hearts of people familiar with the singer, those with Spanish-speaking parents likely to have heard her music playing in their household while growing up. Selena Quintanilla was dubbed the Queen of Trejo music, also called the "Tejano Madonna" for how she incorporated Mexican culture into her style and art. In 1992, she released Entre a Mi Mundo which included the single "Como La Flor," one of her most well-known songs. Selena won the Best Mexican/American Album award at the 1994 Grammys for her album Live. But she's perhaps most famous for her "Dreaming of You" , which ...

... of the fact that she didn't want it to open or have something pop out," Suzette admitted. "She loved it, she felt very free [performing in it].". Not only was Selena a designer, but she knew how to bring her creations to life. The white pearl-embellished bustier she wore while performing at the Houston Astrodome in 1994 is unique because, "She actually was beading, putting the pearls on right before her show in the dressing room," Suzette revealed. "She also did her boots. She could bead pretty quick… She was just sewing while she was talking.". Selena took a simpler wardrobe approach for her 1994 desert-themed music video for "Amor Prohibido." According to Suzette, the red crop top featured in the video actually belonged to her husband, Chris Perez. "Anything that you saw Selena kind of roll up and ...
