Refugee Family Celebrates Arrival To Us
... to English. The Madalo family waited for four years to get into the United States. Her sister in Lebanon is among those still waiting for final approval. The family fled their Christian village before Islamic State fighters invaded several years ago. Madalo and her husband returned to see the town one last time before leaving Iraq. Only devastation remains. Roads are filled with land mines. The town has been destroyed. And their family home was burned to the ground. "Thank God we ran from there and come here," she said at the San Diego airport. Resettlement agencies say more than 67,000 refugees were in the stages of being approved and allowed into the U. S when Trump's January order halted travel for 90 days from seven majority-Muslim countries: Iran, Iraq, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria and Yemen. The order also suspended the refugee program for 120 days. After a federal court in California blocked the order in February thousands rushed to get in before the ...
Afghanistan Wants More Us Help In Fight Against Taliban, Is
... Minister Salahuddin Rabbani welcomed a recent call by U. S. Gen. John Nicholson, the top American commander in Afghanistan, for a few thousand more troops from the U. S. or other coalition partners to help break the stalemate in the war-torn country. The Trump administration has not yet said if it will send more forces in response to Nicholson's comments. Some 8,400 U. S. troops are currently deployed in Afghanistan, performing counterterrorism operations against insurgents and training the Afghan army. The war is in its 16 th year. Citing a deadly attack this month on a military hospital in Kabul, Rabbani said Afghanistan needs U. S. help in addressing "military shortfalls," through increased training, ground and air capabilities, and reconnaissance and intelligence support. The attack was launched by IS with the Taliban. "We stand confident that the new U. S. administration under President Trump will remain strategically engaged and continue its support," Rabbani said at the Atlantic Council think tank ahead of a gathering in Washington of the U. S.-led coalition against IS. He described Nicholson's call as "an ...
Chuck Barris, ‘gong Show’ Host, Dies At 87
... Newlywed Game,” hosted by Bob Eubanks, which ran for 19 years; Game Show Network still airs a version of the show. Over his long career, Barris wore many hits, from pop singer to author to film producer. He also produced the original 1966 off-Broadway staging of the musical “Dames at Sea,” which starred Bernadette Peters. Barris worked as a programming executive at ABC for about a year before launching the Chuck Barris Productions banner in 1965 with a $20,000 loan from his stepfather. Three years later, the company was delivering 22 half-hours of programming to networks per week. It went public in 1968. Barris finally made it in front of the camera when he began hosting “The Gong Show” in 1976. Though it only ran two years on NBC and four years in syndication, the show is still remembered for its wacky spoof of the talent show format. He introduced the amateur contestants dressed in colorful clothing with odd props, with judges Jamie Farr, ...
Five 'gong Show' Moments That Captured Chuck Barris' Gonzo Magic
... to know whether it was better to nudge a contestant into deeper waters or let them run themselves aground. Here are five moments that perfectly exemplify the wacky weirdness of "The Gong Show" and its maestro. 1. Gene Gene the Dancing Machine. Gene Gene the Dancing Machine was a "Gong Show" staple. An NBC stagehand whose backstage dancing caught Barris' eye, Gene Patton was a recurring sensation, whose dancing to an arrangement of Count Basie's "Jumpin' at the Woodside" never failed to bring the audience, judges and Barris joy. 2. The Unknown Comic. Like Gene, the Unknown Comic (Murray Langston) made several appearances on "The Gong Show," telling crummy jokes while wearing a paper bag over his head. The man under the mask (or bag) would find his set inevitably brought to an end by Barris throwing him off the stage. 3. The Worms. Perhaps the most absurdist of all the "talent" that found a home on "The Gong ...

Health Bill Short Of Votes, Gop Leaders Look To Trump
... that have come up before in similarly shocking attacks: What is the obligation of bystanders who see a crime unfolding before them. More. By ERICA WERNER and ALAN FRAM. Associated Press. WASHINGTON (AP) - Short of votes for their health care bill, Republican congressional leaders turned to President Donald Trump on Thursday to wrangle support for the divisive legislation they hope to push through Congress before Easter. But Trump sounded more like he was at the start of a negotiation than ready to close the deal. And combined with opposition from Republicans of all stripes, the president's flexible stance suggested final passage of the bill could be delayed, potentially exposing the legislation to the same kind of extended public backlash that undermined former President Barack Obama's Affordable Care Act from the start. "It's ...
After 2 Years, Florida Court Defines Sexual Intercourse
... intercourse clearly encompasses "acts beyond penile-vaginal intercourse," the court said. The court wrote that gay and bisexual men are disproportionately affected by the spread of HIV and said the disclosure law wasn't meant to be restricted to sex between men and women. The case was brought after Gary Debaun was charged in 2011 with not disclosing that he was HIV-positive before having sex with his partner. Court records show Debaun's partner asked him to take an HIV test, and that Debaun, who knew he was infected, provided fake results showing he was free of the virus that causes AIDS. A lower court threw out the charge, but it was reinstated upon appeal. The case will now go back to the trial court. "It's been a long time coming," said Assistant State Attorney Colleen Dunn, who originally brought the charges against Debaun in Key West nearly six years ...
