Cousins, a meteorologist in the Quad Cities, said the river is flowing somewhere between 84,000 to 85,000 cubic feet per second — in contrast to the typical 24,000 cubic feet per second. “That’s just quite a bit more water than normal for this time of year,” Cousins said. According to the National Weather Service Advanced Hydrologic Prediction Service, the Cedar River is to remain at major flood stage — 16 feet or higher — until Friday afternoon, at which time it is expected to return to moderate flood stage — 14 to 16 feet. The river is forecast to be back at minor flood stage — 12 to 14 feet — Saturday afternoon. On Monday, the river is expected to return to “action stage,” which is 10 to 12 feet. Overall, Cousins recommends residents pay attention to the forecast, and heed local instructions in regards to safety. There’s a slight chance of overnight showers today into Wednesday, Cousins said, but not an amount that would have a major impact on river levels. Many of the homes were seriously damaged but Lockridge said Tuesday it was too early to say how many were destroyed. A fast moving line of severe storms moved through our area overnight. The worst damage appears to be in the Wentzville area. Two people suffered minor injuries when the storms hit a mobile home park. The Wentzville Mobile Manor is just off of West Main Street. Two mobile homes overturned in the strong winds just after midnight. There were downed limbs and roof damage to other mobile homes. The storm also caused a gas leak in the area, prompting police to evacuate some residents. Higgins posted this update to Facebook Tuesday morning. The reclassification is an upgrade from preliminary estimates that the tornado was an EF-3 , according to an update Saturday from the weather service. The Joplin, Mo., tornado in May 2011 that killed 161 people and injured more than 1,000 was an EF-5, with winds estimated at more than 200 mph. In Tuesday’s tornado, wind bursts reached 180 mph. The tornado was six-tenths of a mile wide and traveled 50.4 miles, the longest track of a tornado in the weather service’s Paducah, Ky., coverage area in 25 years. The coverage area includes parts of southeast Missouri, Southern Illinois, western Kentucky and southwestern Indiana. The tornado started about 5 miles northwest of Perryville and ended about 2 miles southwest of Christopher, Ill. The tornado picked up the Parthenon Post Office from it's foundation and threw it more than 200 feet across the street. Postmaster Michael Black said they spent the day going through and trying to salvage the mail. He said he was surprised at the damage. "That was the shocking part. I expected some damage, I've seen tornadoes on TV but never up close. Nobody hurt, you can always get another building for whatever purposes, you can't get another life," Black said.
