Warm Weather Has Syrup Flowing Early
... Laurel Highlands of Somerset and Fayette counties. Vermont is the biggest syrup-producing state, pouring about half a million gallons a year. Quebec is the largest producer of syrup in North America with production exceeding 6.5 million gallons. About 50 gallons of sap cooks down to produce 1 gallon of syrup. This is the second year in a row that the sap has started flowing in January, said Mr. Hess. In 2016 he tapped his maples on Jan. 20 and production continued into mid-March. He said this year the “spiles,” or tree taps, were drilled and went in a week earlier, and he’s hopeful the sap season will stretch out just as it did last year. And it could, based on Accu Weather’s long-term forecast for the Somerset area, which predicts nighttime temperatures will dip below freezing on up to 25 of the next 30 days, although on most nights just barely. “We just take it as it comes. If it would turn out like the long-range forecast, well, I just might run through all of this wood, and that would be a good thing,” Mr. Hess said, pointing to a neatly stacked floor-to-ceiling woodpile that fills a carport sized-structure next to the ...
Potential Exists For Big Snowfall This Weekend
... a big scary map, you probably will see their post soon enough. I wanted to try to jump out in front of the hysteria and talk about what we know and what we don’t know as of this morning. So, here’s what you need to know. There is the potential for a big snow over the course of the weekend. Other things still not known are timing, potential moisture available and the exact track of the system. Even if this system is as potent as model data continues to show, the chance of it actually occurring (as data is showing) is still pretty low. Any posts that try to make a forecast with track and or snow totals more than three days out should be looked at skeptically. We will be ...
Weird Weather Impacts Some Plants, Wildlfie
... timed deep freeze. “People don’t think about it, but if insects come out early and get wiped out by a freeze, just about everything else gets hurt by that, one way or another,” he said. “In spring after about mid-April, the treetops are alive with tiny caterpillars waiting for migrating birds to come back. If they die off, what’s there to eat when insectivorous birds arrive?”. Photoperiod, the hours of light in a day, is the primary trigger for hormonal change in wildlife. Mr. Shalaway suggested temperature can apply subtle pressure to that trigger. “Already, I’ve had cardinals, chickadees, song sparrows, bluebirds, titmice, Carolina wrens. They think it’s spring,” he said. “These weird temperature variations can fool them, maybe get them to start nesting early, maybe even lay an egg. If they do, before the trees fill out, their nests are more visible to predators. ...
