Syracuse Basketball Rolls Past Unc Greensboro In Nit Opener
Syracuse Basketball Rolls Past Unc Greensboro In Nit Opener

... of the last teams left out of the NCAA Tournament. Instead of playing in Salt Lake City, Milwaukee or even Dayton, the Orange found itself back at the Carrier Dome in front of an intimate crowd of 4,288, which is believed to be the smallest in Dome history. Syracuse relied on its offense to take a 47-37 halftime lead. Syracuse ripped the nets on 64 percent shooting in the first half. The Orange made 18 out of 28 shots from the field, including 6-of-10 from 3-point range. What does a UNC Greensboro fan think of Boeheim's jab at their city. White set the pace, hitting seven of his 10 shots from the floor. He made four 3-pointers in the first half. However, UNC Greensboro almost matched Syracuse's offensive efficiency. The Spartans connected on half of their shots, hitting 16 of 32. Syracuse led by as many as 22 points in the ...

The Unbalanced Schedule Helped, But Unc Earned Its Regular-season Championship
The Unbalanced Schedule Helped, But Unc Earned Its Regular-season Championship

... Florida State, Notre Dame (in Greensboro), Virginia and Duke at the Smith Center. Louisville didn’t go undefeated at home in conference play. Neither did Duke. Neither did Virginia. Florida State did, but the Seminoles went 3-6 in conference road games. We hear about the unbalanced schedule every season, the effect it has on the conference race. And it’s true: It has a real effect. Ideally, there would be a round robin like in the old days – a 28-game conference schedule (it’d be fun to see how coaches would react). But this is what we have, and over 18 games it usually becomes clear which team is the best. It became clear enough this season. More thoughts, memories, observations and conclusions from the past three months. -This was not the best the ACC’s ever been. It was a great season, a memorable season – probably one of the best regular seasons in conference history. But let’s not get carried away. This was not the ACC at its very best. Its very best during the short 15-team era? Sure. But if you’re waiting for the ACC to be as good as it was during the 1980 s, the wait goes on. The early-to-mid 1980 s remains the standard. College basketball was a different ...

Kanler Coker’s Memorable March Moment Sends Unc Teammates Into Jubilant Frenzy
Kanler Coker’s Memorable March Moment Sends Unc Teammates Into Jubilant Frenzy

... is on scholarship this season, was among them. Entering the NCAA tournament, Coker, a former member of UNC’s football team, had played in 19 games this season. He’d played for a total of 24 minutes. He’d scored five points. With UNC leading by 35 points, though, and with three minutes remaining, here came Coker on Friday night. His first couple of minutes were mostly uneventful, even if he did make two free throws with about 2½ minutes remaining. He committed a foul with 74 seconds to play. And then, about 10 seconds after that, Coker’s moment arrived. Texas Southern missed a shot. Aaron Rohlman, one of UNC’s walk-ons, rebounded it. Coker received a pass on the other side. Suddenly the basket appeared before him. He was free and open. He drove in, approached the goal, jumped and then pulled the ball back and then up again. Coker’s description didn’t exactly do the play justice: “I just went to the basket and made the layup,” he said. It was a reverse layup, fancy-looking and pure. UNC’s score went from 99 to 101. UNC’s starters and regular reserves celebrated the moment. They jumped and screamed and embraced. It was as if Coker had just made a buzzer ...

Kennedy Meeks Is Crucial To A Deep Tournament Run
Kennedy Meeks Is Crucial To A Deep Tournament Run

... he can seem slow or awkward at times, he really is a solid team defender and it’s rare that a big man will destroy UNC. Carolina has struggled with playmakers like Malik Monk and Luke Kennard , but Meeks has been able to hold his own in the paint. As mentioned briefly earlier, March is the time when teams really focus on what makes them great. UNC is a No. 1 seed, in part, because of their rebounding and total domination of the paint. When they’ve gone away from that, they can lose—ahem Duke in the ACC Tournament. This tournament, Williams has two big men seniors that should be ready to capitalize on all of the previous four years of hard work and determination. Meeks has the talent and experience to dominate this tournament and, if given the chance to play more than 24 minutes a game, he really could. From here on out, every game could be his last. Meeks has been as steady as they come in Chapel Hill, but now could be the breakout stretch everyone has wanted. Truly, of all the top teams in contention, no team has a more experienced or capable man at the center spot. Time to watch Meeks do his thing for one final time in ...

Texas Southern: The Tigers finished first in the SWAC with a 17-2 record during the regular season, and capped things off by winning the conference tournament over Alcorn State, 53-50. On Its 50th Anniversary, Let’s Honor Unc’s Team Of ’67

... recalled: “We hit it off pretty good. As you know, there were not many minorities at Carolina at the time, but I took him around and showed him the university. I took him to where everybody was, whites and minorities. I took him to a lot of the white fraternity parties and introduced him to a lot of people. That showed him there was not the prejudice there that was being sold to him by other schools” that were bad-mouthing UNC and the South. “He got the opportunity to see who else he would be playing with, too,” Grubar said. Meeting his prospective teammates “most definitely” influenced his decision to matriculate at UNC, Scott said last week. Grubar, he said, took him to see the Temptations, which would have been enough to sell me on the place. (During his visit to Duke the next week, though, he was taken to the Stallion Club to see Otis Redding. Decisions, decisions.). Grubar and Scott, as have many of their former teammates, remain friends: Grubar said players from the 1967 through 1972 teams will get together in May for dinner at ...

Will Sean Miller Take Over For Roy Williams As Unc Basketball Coach
Will Sean Miller Take Over For Roy Williams As Unc Basketball Coach

... You're probably thinking to yourself, "did I really just read that headline right?". This isn't click-bait or some kind of hot take. Arizona head coach Sean Miller has been linked to North Carolina. Joe Giglio - a reputable college hoops source for the News and Observer in North Carolina - sent this tweet on Friday. At least part of Sean Miller's Archie/State stance, according to a source, is Sean believes there's a chance he could be UNC's next coach. — Joe Giglio (@jwgiglio) March 17, 2017. Wait, so Dayton head coach Archie Miller didn't take the N. C. State job because his brother, Sean, will eventually become the UNC head coach and continue to own the ACC. I guess it sort of makes sense. When you really hash out the nuts and bolts of this whole thing, it's a bit bizarre. Essentially, Archie Miller was connected to the N. C. State vacancy as soon as the Wolfpack brass announced they would fire Mark Gottfried, but Miller adamantly denied ever having contact ...

I’m heading up to Brooklyn this morning for the ACC tournament, which began there on Tuesday, and already there have been stories about how this is a fitting site for the tournament, given the ACC’s deep basketball roots in New York City. Frank Mc Guire, the first North Carolina coach to lead the Tar Heels to sustained national prominence, was born in New York City. Jim Valvano, the N. C. State coach who led the Wolfpack to the 1983 national championship, was born in Queens. Some of the ACC’s best players are from the New York City area. For UNC, though, the ties to New York perhaps run deeper than any other ACC school. There’s ...

Questions That Will Determine Whether Unc Returns To The Final Four
Questions That Will Determine Whether Unc Returns To The Final Four

... to form. This question is probably less important than the two above it, because as good as Jackson has been this season, it has to be only a matter of time before he returns to performing like he did the vast majority of the season. Right. Jackson earned ACC Player of the Year honors because he was UNC’s best, most consistent player throughout the season, and because he helped lead the Tar Heels to the ACC regular-season championship by two full games. And yet people still probably didn’t appreciate Jackson. Some of his numbers, after all, don’t compare favorably to other player of the year candidates in the ACC. What the stat-heads miss, though, is that only part of Jackson’s game (and only part of anyone’s game) can be quantified. Even when he’s not scoring, Jackson is drawing defensive attention. His movement, whether it’s with or without the ball, often dictates the flow of the Tar Heels’ offense. But for UNC to make the Final Four, Jackson has to play better in the tournament than he has in UNC’s past four games, in which he’s made ...

Unc Coach Roy Williams Defends Timeout Philosophy In Rambling, Good-natured Rant
Unc Coach Roy Williams Defends Timeout Philosophy In Rambling, Good-natured Rant

... two (media) timeouts during the course of their run, anyway. I mean, timeouts are overrated, I believe. Godalmighty, we take a timeout every time the referee gets a heartbeat. You know, 12, 16, 8, 4. I don’t talk to them – why do we leave the huddle? Watch me. I keep my guys in the huddle less than any coach in basketball. I send them out. I’m tired of talking to them. There’s only so much I can say. “So my policy, philosophy, thought process – I’m going to call a timeout when I think it’s the right thing to call. I mean, seriously, one of the coaches said, ‘You want to call a timeout?’ Justin Jackson got the ball on the wing and Isaiah Hicks is posted low with a little guy behind him. I like that. So I’m not going to take that away. But I did – 1991, go look at it. Called one with 12 minutes to go in a half. Will I call one Saturday? Friday. It’s Friday when we play … But I called a timeout at the 11, there were two timeouts in there. ...
