What’s Behind Pop Culture’s Love For Silent, Violent Little Girls
... her fight scenes. What does she say to the god of death? “Not today.”. Anyway, spoiler alert: Laura doesn’t stay silent forever. At a certain point in the film, she suddenly becomes very talkative, railing at Logan in mile-a-minute Spanish. But this isn’t presented as communication, either (it’s not subtitled, which is a definite choice) and it doesn’t lead to any new depths in their relationship. If anything, it’s reminiscent of The Fifth Element’s Leeloo, another female lab escapee who can take on a room of Mondoshawans with her bare feet but only speaks in an indecipherable alien tongue. The lack of a shared language between her and her male counterpart means they won’t connect on an intellectual level; she exists to be observed as an object of contemplation. Like Leeloo and Eleven and River, Laura is abused but divinely virtuous — an savant so capable and intuitive that she no longer exhibits any recognizable human behavior. We’re told these girls ...
The History Of The Comic That Inspired Logan And Revolutionized The Marvel Brand
... leads us to what is perhaps the most important factor: the big heart of “Old Man Logan.” Much of Millar’s work is infamously cynical, relying on shock value and little more. Not so here. True, Wolverine brutally murders the evil Hulk, but then decides it’s his responsibility to take care of the Green One’s infant son. Hawkeye has secrets and contours that show a reverence for the way the character was portrayed before his big-screen reinvention (and before Millar, himself, inspired that reinvention in Ultimates); Doctor Doom’s wordless cameo is granted an awesome nobility by Mc Niven’s illustration of his eyes and posture; and above all, Millar’s writing shows a sincere love for Wolverine in a way that’s rare in comics. One moment stands out. Throughout the story, Hawkeye keeps getting irritated with Logan for not popping his claws, prompting the weeping hero to recount his tragic tale over a campfire. “Now you just try tellin’ me Wolverine didn’t deserve to ...
Derby, Auckland Cup Blows For Logan-gibbs
... Auckland Cup. "It's a shame we can't get to the Auckland Cup with him because that was always going to be his race," Logan said. "He deserves his chance at stud. He's got good bloodlines and is a Group 3 winner.". St Jean, a son of Teofilio, began his career in Ireland then raced in Australia for Aaron Purcell , winning four races before crossing the Tasman and joining the Logan-Gibbs stable. Despite the setback with Romancer, Logan and Gibbs still have a strong Derby prospect in Wyndspelle, the last-start winner of the Group 2 Waikato Guineas who furthered his preparation with an exhibition gallop at Avondale last week. "He's thrived and looks brilliant, I'm happy with him," Logan said. "He hasn't put a foot wrong and I'm not too worried about the Derby distance (2400 m). He's out of a staying mare and he relaxes.". Logan will be chasing ...

Logan Ryan, Duron Harmon To Let Patriots Match Contract Offers
... offering the Patriots the right of first refusal, according to The Boston Herald’s Jeff Howe. If the Patriots defensive backs get a contract offer in free agency, they will see if New England will match that offer. They won’t get away without the Patriots’ approval. Looks like Logan Ryan and Duron Harmon will hit free agency then present their best offers to Pats to see if they'll be interested to match. — Jeff Howe (@jeffphowe) March 2, 2017. Ryan had games where he struggled in the first half of the season, but he began to turn a corner as the year progressed. He spent much of the season working as the Patriots’ No. 2 and No. 3 cornerback — depending the styles of the opposing receivers. Cornerback Eric Rowe often took the No. 2 corner spot if the opposing receiver was taller and more physical. But Ryan’s Super Bowl performance typified the defensive back’s progress, as he finished tied for the team-high with six tackles. He was also solid in coverage while working against Julio Jones, Mohamed Sanu and Taylor Gabriel. Harmon played as New England’s third safety this season. While he was a rotational player, he still managed to get a major workload at 48 ...
Logan
... To the filmmakers’ credit, there is a poignant subplot about a family who becomes a role model. Dad (Eriq La Salle, E. R.), mom (Elise Neal, TV’s The Hughleys) and son (Quincy Fouse, The Goldbergs) are on a highway transporting horses. After an incident, the animals escape and Logan, traveling with Laura and Professor X, helps to retrieve them. The family is grateful, gracious and gives the fugitives a place to spend the night. The very sage Professor X tells the emotionally-distant Logan that this is what a loving family is like. The encounter helps Logan bond with Laura. The significance of this passage shouldn’t be lost. The movie sets up the “ideal” family as African-American. It’s a social statement that would not have happened 30 years ago in a Hollywood movie. Don’t be put off by the slow beginning. Don’t be deterred by Logan’s incessant bitterness. At ...
Eagles' Howie Roseman On Bennie Logan
... just a matter of what that means.". Logan likely will become a free agent on March 7, when negotiations can begin, and he would be free to officially sign with another team on March 9. He was a third-round draft pick by the Eagles in 2013. Logan is one of the top defensive tackles headed for the free-agent market, but now that Kansas City Chiefs will cut loose defensive tackle Dontari Poe , Logan's price might drop. Chiefs' head coach Andy Reid gave the usual response on Poe on Wednesday at the NFL Scouting Combine : "We love him and would love to have him back.". What Eagles need to accomplish at NFL Combine. The six-year, $102 million deal the Eagles gave to Fletcher Cox last offseason is standing in the way of bringing Logan back. Cox will count $9.4 million against the cap in 2017, which makes a big-money deal unlikely for Logan because the Eagles would be investing a ton of money in defensive tackles. When Logan goes, the Eagles will need to address defensive tackle in the draft or free agency. Current options on the roster to replace Logan as a starter are Beau Allen and Destiny Vaeao. THE NO-HUDDLE SHOW: Stay or ...
Logan' To Sink Claws Into $65m-plus U.s. Debut
... third Wolverine movie and the tenth title in the X-Men franchise. The story follows the adventure that ensues when Logan, who is caring for an ailing Charles Xavier (Patrick Stewart), encounters a mysterious young girl named Laura (Dafne Keen) in need of their help. Logan, a critical darling, made its premiere at the Berlin International Film Festival in February and currently boasts a 93 percent fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Also opening nationwide on Friday is Lionsgate's The Shack, a faith-based movie based on the best-selling novel of the same name about a father's transformative spiritual journey. The film, starring Sam Worthington and Octavia Spencer, who is fresh off her Oscar nomination for Hidden Figures, will play in roughly 2,800 theaters and is projected to gross $10 million to $12 million, but there's room for upside. Another Oscar movie, Moonlight, will aggressively up its theater count this weekend after winning the Academy Award for best picture in a surprise upset (and after La La Land was first declared the winner in the biggest blunder ...
Film Review
... powers are not always within his control; as with many a mere mortal, his geriatric brain doesn’t function as it once did, and the result is seizures of bone-rattling intensity for those around him. Tending to his care are Logan, now a hard-drinking limo driver whose unearthly aptitude for self-healing is on the wane, and Caliban (Stephen Merchant), an albino mutant with tracking abilities who handles domestic chores for the trio while sheltering himself from the daylight. The lives of this last-of-their-kind collective are by no means easy or serene, but they can at least count on a certain routine. Then a young girl with a ferocious gaze, Laura (Dafne Keen), arrives on their rusty doorstep, along with a wad of cash and the desperate final request of her caretaker, Gabriela (Elizabeth Rodriguez, of Orange Is the New ...
