... and The Shining. Maria Maggenti adapted her bittersweet screenplay from the popular young adult novel by Lauren Oliver. It’s “Cupid Day” at the Pacific Northwest high school of popular student Sam Kingston (Vampire Academy’s Zoey Deutch). Sam plans to celebrate this pre-Valentine’s Day occasion by partying with her fun-loving gal pals — Lindsay (Halston Sage), Ally (Cynthy Wu) and Elody (Medalion Rahimi) — while also losing her virginity with her erstwhile boyfriend Rob (Kian Lawley). Frozen out of the cool zone are earnest nerd Kent (Logan Miller), who has a secret crush on Sam, and school “psycho” Juliet (Elena Kampouris), who is bullied just for being different. The day will actually turn out to be even more complicated than Sam planned. Something happens — she’s not sure what exactly — that has her reliving Cupid Day over and over, but also with the power to make small and possibly significant changes. “Don’t go emo on us,” somebody says, and thankfully the film doesn’t. A fine actress, Deutch makes a compelling and empathetic ...
Table 19' Movie Not Worth A Reservation
... a mark on Francie and Teddy. Walter is an awkward, quirky guy, and Francie and Teddy’s cousin — his struggles to fit in offer the film’s best and heartiest laughs. At one point, he ends up donning a red jacket that looks exactly like the jackets the servers at the wedding wear, leading to some amusing moments in which the employees demand that he assist them in waiting tables. Renzo is initially a promising source of humor with his woeful attempts at wooing girls. He attempts to get a dance by bragging about his penis size to a potential partner, and later misinterprets a lady’s sarcastic comments as an indication he will get laid. But he isn’t characterized as more than an awkward geek, and Revolori’s talents are wasted. Bina and Jerry are the least interesting of the bunch. Their marital problems are vague and clichéd, as the film portrays Jerry as a distant husband but does little to explore why ...
Table 19
... way to Table 19, I was in a good mood. It was “Taco Tuesday” and we were going for Mexican food before the show. The movie is a comedy that was originally written by Jay and Mark Duplass, who do indie pictures I dig (go find Safety Not Guaranteed). This was starring two comedic greats — Craig Robinson (The Office, Hot Tub Time Machine) as well as Stephen Merchant. He’s the tall bloke who was in Extras and co-creator of the British version of The Office. So I was in the best of moods driving down to Mission Valley to watch this comedy. We pulled off the freeway on to Friars Road, to grab dinner before the film. Yet the main road was closed due to the flooding from the heavy storm that hit San Diego. We turned down one street, which brought us into a parking lot. There were about 100 cars waiting to get out, and nobody was moving. We parked there, and walked two miles to the Mexican restaurant. Yet to get there, we walked through a closed road. We saw a few dog walkers doing it, so we figured it wouldn’t be a problem. Well, we ended up in mud and ...

... Pictures. They ordered the chicken: (L-R) Lisa Kudrow, Craig Robinson, June Squibb, Stephen Merchant, Anna Kendrick and Tony Revolori in Table 19. Jace Downs/Fox Searchlight Pictures. Fifteen years ago, director Jeffrey Blitz kicked off his career with the hit documentary Spellbound, which brought audiences into the high-stakes world of spelling bees, following eight competitors on the road to the 1999 National Spelling Bee. The kids were all outcasts, products of hard-driving parents who pushed them to memorize words like "hellebore" and "seguidilla" and study their lingual roots like thickly bespectacled Talmudic scholars. But when they got together for the big event, they had all these specific qualities in common and experienced a social ease and camaraderie that eluded them in everyday life. Blitz's insight into these types of characters would later extend to his feature ...
