Police Arrest Man In South Shore Plaza Shooting
... come here all the time,” Valencia said. Kalpita Rane, 30, smiled as she held the door for another patron after 11 a.m. “Think it’s safe?” the Braintree resident quipped. Rane said her friend sent a text message to her shortly after 7 p.m. Friday. Her friend was shopping at American Eagle and heard the gunfire. The friend’s message read. “ ‘Don’t come to the mall,’ ” Rane said. Rane said her friend first suspected the shooting was carried out by terrorists. A cool-headed American Eagle manager rushed panicked shoppers to a storage room, Rane said. “She kept them calm and protected them,” Rane said. Hingham resident Gerry Foley, 59, said the shooting happened “a little too close to home.”. “When I heard about it on the news, the first thing I thought was that it was another terrorist thing,” Foley said. Foley praised law enforcement for responding to the incident quickly and with heavy manpower. “The police response was admirable, I thought,” Foley said. Lynette Williams, also 59, of Roxbury, said she is “not one bit” nervous about shopping at South Shore Plaza. “It was an isolated incident,” Williams said on her way into Macy’s. “I was just hoping that everyone was ...

A 14-year-old Charged With Murder
... sense into him, warning that the streets would bring nothing but trouble. But her words didn’t seem to sink in. At age 10, Raeshawn went from being a homebody to spending most of his time out of the house. He started talking back to Retha and his teachers, became aggressive, and was acting out in school. He bullied schoolmates and refused to listen to teachers. During the summer, he witnessed the fatal stabbing of a friend. He attended three different schools, including one for youth with emotional, behavioral, and learning disabilities, but his behavior didn’t improve. He got in trouble for throwing a chair across a classroom. By the next year, he was hanging out at parties with 20-year-olds, and in parks in Dorchester and Mattapan, where older boys whiled away the time. He started smoking marijuana at home while his mother was at work. Ruth was worried. “Don’t let him go to that park,” she warned the boy’s mother. “If you leave him, these big boys will get him. Once they get a hold of him, it’s hard for you to get your child ...
South Braintree Square Owners Stay The Course
... through the internet and phone now," Kurlansky said, adding that the trend mirrors patterns being seen by national retailers. Sachetti recalled this past Christmas as the first one in memory without bad traffic by South Shore Plaza, but said Barry's Flower Shop will remain a brick and mortar location. "We're prepping for Valentine's Day so don't forget the love of your life," Sachetti said, adding that the business had a strong Christmas season in 2016. Alex Kostas, owner of Charlie's Shoe Service, said his business in the square has been slower this winter. "Business is not so good, but it's alright," Kostas said. "Summertime is more busy.". Kostas said when he began cobbling in Braintree he had six competitors in town, but now he is the last one standing. Charlie's Shoe Service has been bringing in new customers and credits his good prices with maintaining a ...
Abington Will Replace Fixtures That Caused Lead, Copper In School Water
... this fall by the state departments of Public Health and Environmental Protection. Abington Superintendent Peter Schafer said the fixtures that produced contaminated water have been shut off, and will be replaced or filtered and re-tested before they are turned back on. Abington was one of 179 school districts to participate in a voluntary state water testing program in October, but Schafer said the district conducts this testing every year. "Probably because of what happened in Flint, Michigan, with lead in the water, the state decided to put money into this testing," Schafer said. "I think Flint raised awareness of this.". The October testing measured the levels of lead and copper in water from different water fixtures in each of the district's five schools. Lead and copper can both cause short-term and long-term health problems, including stomach issues, learning disabilities, ...
11 Firms Vie For Weymouth's Chapman School Job
... School Building Authority for review and approval by Feb. 8 and have the contract executed by early March. The feasibility phase is expected to take up to two years, following by another year of planning before construction would begin. On Nov. 9, the authority gave the town permission to move on to the feasibility phase, which involves hiring an owner’s project manager and designer. In October, the town council approved spending $1 million on that phase – about $250,000 of which will fund the owner’s project manager. The state will reimburse up to 56.26 percent of the cost, or $562,600. Ted Langill, chairman of the school building committee and Mayor Robert Hedlund’s chief of staff, said the committee will evaluate each firm using a criteria provided by the authority, which includes relevant experience, their knowledge of building codes, procurement and sustainability and the project team’s current commitments and availability. Local firms that responded to the town’s request for services include: the ...
Plymouth County Sheriff To Join Immigration Screening Program
... agencies to interview incoming inmates and access ICE databases so they can flag anyone to ICE who may be in the country illegally. The program has been a part of immigration law since 1996, and has been modified over the years to reflect ICE's enforcement priorities. Currently, ICE has agreements with 34 agencies in 16 states, mostly at local jails. Hodgson said the training could help prevent undocumented immigrants from being released before ICE agents are able to check their status. "The advantage to this program is that some people might bail themselves out before we can identify them," Hodgson said. "ICE has limited manpower. By having this immediate access, we want to make sure we have every tool in our toolbox to identify anybody who is a threat from being released.". The plans by Hodgson and Mc Donald come at a time when many immigrants are fearful of being ...

Macy’s Decision Signals More Than Closing Two Stores
... great appeal to retailers. The fact remains, however, that people increasingly want to shop online for convenience, saving time and the world of product it makes available. We certainly have sympathy for the people who will lose jobs when the Brockton and Taunton Macy’s are gone. It is cold comfort to them that technology is changing, people’s habits are changing and fewer people see going to the mall as recreation. In addition to assisting the people who will be losing jobs, we need to be thinking about what we are going to do with stores and perhaps, someday, entire malls that have outlived their usefulness. We only need so many health clubs and indoor play spaces for children and adults. Other communities have used closed stores and malls for charter schools, office complexes and research facilities. We are not suggesting in any way that Westgate or the Galleria are at that point. They are not. It is, however, something to think about now. Here's one opinion. What's yours? Trivia Contest At South Shore Plaza On Saturday
... Ledger @Fhanson_Ledger. BRAINTREE – More than 20 teams will compete for the title in the Braintree Rotary Club’s “Totally Team Trivia” competition Saturday at South Shore Plaza. The competition begins at 2 p.m, at Macy’s Center Court on the lower level with the first of four preliminary rounds, with the winner of each round going on to the finals. The event replaces the annual “Great Grown-Up Spelling Bee” that the club had held each fall, said club president-elect Melissa Garlisi. “We found that in the last couple of years, interest in the spelling bee had fallen off a bit. A member suggested a trivia contest because they have been gaining in popularity,” she said. All of the team slots have been filled for the competition, but there are spaces available for individual contestants. “Response to the event has been great, in term of sponsorships and participation,” she said. Trivia DJ Erin Mc Millen will host the competition. Questions will cover entertainment, geography, sports, art, literature and ...
