The Handmaid's Tale Super Bowl Trailer And Release Date

... Nov 22, 2016 at 2:05 pm PST. The Handmaid's Tale Story. For those who haven't read this modern classic, The Handmaid's Tale is set in part of what was the United States. A harsh theocratic government has taken over following a staged terrorist attack blamed on Islamic terrorits. In this new state order, women's rights are stripped away by the totalitarian Christian government. Our protagonist is Offred, a "handmaid" who is part of a class of women kept as concubines, valued for her fertility, but not her personhood in a dying world threatened with climate change, religious fundamentalism, and depopulation. So, yeah, pretty darn topical. Previously, Offred has been played on-screen by Natasha Richardson in a 1990 feature based on the Atwood novel. Here's the trailer, if you want to check it out/appreciate how far the art of the trailer has come in the last few decades. The ...

A Real-life Dystopia? Why 'the Handmaid's Tale' Should Be Your First Read Of 2017

... past, and in some cases, the wish to, replaces justice and truth. Perhaps a bit extreme, you’re thinking? I know. But 2016 was awful – the Syrian conflict, Trump, Zika, terror attacks and growing racial tensions. Yet I’ve personally got even lower expectations for 2017; using minimal clairvoyance, nationalism looks set to rise on a worldwide scale, global warming is growing at a more devastating pace than ever, and Trump will actually ascend to his presidency. Atwood herself tweeted an enthusiastic reader who had recently finished The Handmaid’s Tale to say that she had done so ‘just in time’, so let’s cast a slightly fearful glance on why this speculative fiction is more relevant today than ever. It makes sense to start at the beginning: a fake terrorist attack, supposedly instigated by Islamic extremists, covers the actual coup by the “Sons of Jacob”, who quickly enforce an Old Testament-based regime under the pretense of protecting the state. Atwood hints at the willful ignorance of the public, the fear preyed upon by the media, being stunned, shocked, and subdued into silence – all ...

Handmaid's' Fidelity, Pivot's Demise And 'national Treasure' Confusion

... to was the Pivot launch and you guys were, like, mean. Right?" he recalled. "You guys basically, like, someone would put up their hand, and they’d go, 'F— you.' And then Evan Shapiro would be, like, 'Well, I’m not sure if that’s the situation.' That was a very difficult half hour. It was me, two gang members, Joseph Gordon Levitt, and Meghan Mc Cain. And you guys were all just explaining why Pivot is a bad idea, which, congratulations, I guess. At the time, I thought you were mean, and now I am sort of like, 'Well, maybe we should listen to what these people have to say.'". * If you watch Hulu's Casual, you know that the core family is prone to. bad decisions. The family is almost entirely self-destructive to the point at which doing healthy things would be more surprising than the opposite. I was curious if there was any room for personal growth, or if that would make Casual something it would never want to be. "I think they always have to learn or ...

We Need Grim Art Like The Handmaid’s Tale Now More Than Ever
We Need Grim Art Like The Handmaid’s Tale Now More Than Ever

... likely to see an explosion of it, and how we need to protect the people who make it. This discussion arose through a rather nasty coincidence that no one saw coming: Hulu’s new adaptation of one of the most politicized novels of all time, Margaret Atwood’s novel The Handmaid’s Tale, will be airing early in the first year of the Trump administration. A work of speculative fiction, The Handmaid’s Tale was published in 1985 and has never been out of print since. Revered as one of the greatest dystopian novels of all time and considered by many to be a cornerstone of feminist literature for its depiction of patriarchy, the book is about a near-future New England, where Christian extremists use a staged Muslim terrorist attack to overthrow the government and establish a totalitarian theocracy. In “the Republic of Gilead,” women are disempowered to the extent that they are forbidden to read or write. Due to rising levels of sterility, fertile women are forced to be “Handmaids,” losing even their names to the duty of bearing children for elite government officials if said officials’ wives (legally speaking, ...

4 Book Characters We Hope To See In 'the Handmaid's Tale
4 Book Characters We Hope To See In 'the Handmaid's Tale

... Tale Is Not an Instruction Manual”. The story depicts a version of America where a totalitarian regime takes advantage of fears about Islamic terrorists in order to seize power. They then proceed to remove nearly all women’s rights. Protagonist Offred (Elizabeth Moss) is a Handmaid, a concubine who is assigned to be used by The Commander (Joseph Fiennes) for reproductive purposes. But she’s not the only fascinating character. Here are some others Hulu’s adaptation should include. 1. Offred’s mother. Offred’s mother has a small role that is purely in flashbacks, but she’s an unapologetic feminist who stands for everything the new regime is trying to crush. At one point, Offred even sees a video of her as a younger woman involved in a protest. As the show is expanding the roles of some side characters, there’s ample opportunity for Radical ...

... survive and find the daughter that was taken from her.". The Canadian author has long been fascinated by what she calls "speculative fiction" rather than science fiction and says The Handmaid's Tale is very much the former. "Science fiction has monsters and spaceships; speculative fiction could really happen," she told The Guardian  in a 2003 interview. Who is involved. Elisabeth Moss of Mad Men fame has been cast as the titular handmaid, Offred; a divorcee who is forced into sexual servitude in order to bear children with a military commander, played by Joseph Fiennes. Elsewhere, Orange is the New Black star Samira Wiley will appear, along with Yvonne Strahovski, Ann Dowd and Madeline Brewer. Atwood will be involved in the production, acting as a consulting producer for the show. Bruce Miller, Daniel Wilson, Fran Sears and Warren Littlefield have been brought in as producers for the series. Where can I see it. If you're based in the UK, the answer is not ...

... unaware of what's coming. "I feel like it's our responsibility as artists to reflect the time that we are living in," Wiley said. "The show reflects the social climate that we are living in, and for me personally, the issues are specifically women and their bodies and who has control of that. Do we have control of it? Does someone else have control of it?". 8. Ann Dowd plays a formidable, but complex, female villain. Though Gilead and the forces behind that regime are the show's true "villain", the closest thing it has to an antagonist early on is Dowd's fearsome schoolmistress Aunt Lydia. Lydia is in charge of the ominous "Red Center", a re-education facility where women are sent to train as Handmaids. "At the core of her choices, she loves these girls deeply and wants them to succeed in this new world, and she is keenly aware ...
